21Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Last Week: 24
Remember before the season when Thursday night's Clemson-Wake game looked like it might be the game of the year in the ACC? Now it's just a de facto elimination game to see which of about seven contenders will remain in the race.
Last game: Lost to Navy, 24-17.
Next game: Thursday vs. Clemson.
22Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Last Week: 25
What I wouldn't give to see this team go up against one of the four Big 12 teams (Texas Tech, Missouri, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State) ranked in the top six nationally in total offense. All are currently looking up at No. 1 Tulsa.
Last game: Beat Rice, 63-28.
Next game: Saturday at SMU.
23Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Last Week: --
OK, OK. All you Jackets fans who have e-mailed me about my inordinately low preseason expectations for Paul Johnson's first season -- I was wrong. Tech's offense gets a little bit better every week and its defense is lights out.
Last game: Beat Duke, 27-0.
Next game: Saturday vs. Gardner-Webb.
24Michigan State Spartans
Last Week: --
The Spartans possess two time-tested qualities in the Big Ten: A work-horse running back (Javon Ringer) and a ball-hawking defense (13 turnovers gained). However, that same defense continues to allow big chunks of yardage.
Last game: Beat Iowa, 16-13.
Next game: Saturday at Northwestern.
25Ball State Cardinals
Last Week: --
I thought the Cardinals' high-flying offense might go south following star WR Dante Love's spinal injury, but after averaging 36 points in their past two games, it's starting to look like Nate Davis & Co. may be able to run the table.
Last game: Beat Toledo, 31-0.
Next game: Saturday at Western Kentucky.

Dropped out: USF, Kansas, Auburn, Wisconsin, Oregon.
