Top recruit spurning Saban, Spurrirer

As Wednesday approaches, Jadeveon Clowney isn't feeling the squeeze. [Clowney] has said he might not sign until his birthday, which happens to fall on Valentine's Day. ... The pressure and hype surrounding Clowney's recruitment has been so intense he started monitoring phone calls and stopped taking them from members of the media. It has been reported that Clowney even allows phone calls from [Steve] Spurrier and [Nick] Saban to go to voicemail. Clowney might just be the highest profile high school athlete the Palmetto State has ever produced. (The Post and Courier) Comment

Harbaugh has faith in Alex Smith

Though speculation had it that the 49ers would find their 2011 quarterback by way of the draft, free agency or trade, Jim Harbaugh added another option in a radio appearance. Harbaugh raised a fourth option -- retaining a current quarterback, in particular, Alex Smith. "I've been studying Alex Smith and watching him," Harbaugh said. ... "And I believe that Alex Smith can be a winning quarterback in the National Football League. I'm excited to work with him, get to know him." (Sacrameno Bee) Comment

Bird forced into firing O'Brien

Jim O'Brien didn't make it through the weekend. This was the owner's call, pure and simple. This was Herb Simon rolling into team president Larry Bird's office last week and telling the Hoosier legend that a head coaching change must be made. The Indiana Pacers will try to sell it otherwise, and even Bird tried to sell it Sunday afternoon as his decision, but that's a complete fabrication. Simon wanted coach Jim O'Brien gone after the team's winless West Coast trip, and when that didn't happen, Simon insisted upon O'Brien's ouster after Wednesday's miserable home performance against Orlando.
