Georgetown investigating hazing, racial bias on track and field teams
Georgetown is currently conducting two separate investigations into the track and field team, the school confirmed to The Washington Post.
The investigations concern alleged hazing, racial bias and sexual harassment.
The men's team came under fire after a student affiliated with the group sent out a video trailer in April for the "Hoya Snaxa Awards," which awards team members points for performing lewd acts. The controversy intensified after another member of the team filed a formal complaint about the awards and sexual harassment in the locker room.
The school's Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Affirmative Action launched its own investigation into the track program after sprinter Stefanie Kurgatt wrote a blog post (warning: post contains strong language) claiming she and other members of the team were subject to unfair treatment and marginalization, resulting in five minority athletes leaving or being dropped from the team.
The track and field team's head coach, Patrick Henner, has not been placed on administrative leave by the school while the investigations are underway, and Georgetown told the Postthat it hopes to have both the racial bias and sexual misconduct reviews completed “in the coming weeks.”
