Jason Collins, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will speak at Democratic convention
Two prominent former NBA players will speak at the Democratic National Convention next week.
Jason Collins, the first openly gay player to appear in an NBA game, will appear, as will Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Collins’s twin brother Jarron will also speak at the Philadelphia convention, Collins said.
Collins, 37, announced he is gay in a May 2013 Sports Illustrated essay. He signed with the Nets in February 2014 and played 22 games before announcing his retirement in the Nov. 24, 2014, issue of SI.
Abdul-Jabbar has been outspoken on social issues, writing for outlets such as TIME and The Washington Post. He wrote a piece for the Post in February lobbying against Donald Trump.
Among the other celebrities scheduled to speak are Eva Longoria, Lena Dunham and Chloe Grace Moretz.
