Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan signed a contract extension in the offseason

Bulls head coach Billy Donovan signed a multi-year contract extension with the Bulls in the offseason.

The Chicago Bulls showed their commitment to head coach Billy Donovan. Shams Charania of the Athletic reported that the Bulls signed Donovan to a contract extension in the offseason.

“Sources: The Chicago Bulls signed head coach Billy Donovan to a contract extension after last season’s playoff run snapping a four-year postseason drought, adding years to his original four-year deal,” Charania tweeted.

Donovan had two years left on his four-year deal, and now he will remain under contract with the Bulls for a longer period of time.

The 57-year-old joined the Bulls in September 2020, shortly after Arturas Karnisovas and the then-new front office fired Jim Boylen. Donovan won two NCAA Championships with Florida and coached the Thunder for five years, compiling a 243-157 record and leading them to the playoffs in his five seasons with the team from Oklahoma City.

Billy Donovan is 86-88 in the regular season and 1-4 in the playoffs as Bulls head coach. In his first season, the Bulls missed the play-in tournament by two games after going 31-41. In his second season, the additions of DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso helped him lead the Bulls to a 46-36 record and the sixth seed in the East.

It was the Bulls’ first winning season since 2015-16 and their first playoff appearance since 2017, but the Bucks eliminated them in five games in the first round.

This season, the Bulls are off to a 9-11 start, and their performance so far has been contradictory; they have wins against the Celtics, Bucks, and Heat, teams they had a hard time beating last year, and losses against the Spurs, Magic and Thunder which are not really top-tier squads in the NBA at the moment.
