TV Ratings: Lakers-Nuggets Game 2 sets 17-year low for conference finals

Sam Amico

Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets was down 36 percent from Game 1 in terms of television viewership, as relayed by RealGM.

Game 2 of that series was played Sunday night on TNT and went head-to-head with the NBC's broadcast of the NFL game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

The Lakers won, 105-103, after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Anthony Davis, and now lead the series by a 2-0 count.

Per RealGM, Game 2 averaged 3.7 million viewers, as compared to about 17.7 million for the NFL.

That made Lakers-Nuggets Game 2 the least-watched conference finals game since 2003, per Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch.

This follows the news that Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat also dropped to a 17-year low. That game, broadcast by ESPN, also went up against an NFL game on NBC, last Thursday.

Along with that, ratings for the first round of the playoffs dropped 27 percent since last season and an astonishing 40 percent from two years ago.

While the NBA is presumably disappointed in the TV ratings, the decline was also to be expected, given the fact this is the first time the playoffs have gone head-to-head with the NFL season (as well as other sports, such as the NHL and MLB, which have also returned).

Ratings were also down before the league's hiatus, during it's normal calendar, with a February report of a double-digit decline from 2018-19.

No mention of politics for ratings crater?

NFL is not on cable, seems odd to leave that out since there are a lot of people without cable television.

Americans are sick of the agenda being shoved down their throats. I used to watch sports to get away from reality and relax and enjoy. Now, sports are just an extension of CNN and MSNBC.

Doc J. made me love basketball, Micheal Jordan I was obsessed. Lebron made me hate basketball. I will never watch it again.

Refs and media are way too blind to Lebron. If the Nuggets actually beat the Lakers, I believe more people would be interested in the NBA Finals. It would be more intriguing than the Lakers and Heat/Celtics. Seriously...no one would be watching that finals series.

Im so glad my sixers picked this year to get swept. Even with them still in it, I think I only watched two of their games. With them out, I couldnt care less, especially with the absurd support for the BLM racist hate group.
Keep that bs on the court next year, and......ill just keep not watching, not like my sixers are magically gonna be worthwhile anytime soon anyways.
But with all that being said, im so happy to see this, a lot of people are tired of the bs, and racist narrative being shoved down our throats.
If yall dont like how things are here, take all your money we gave you and retire and go move to another country, pretty simple.
But nahhhh you wont dare do that.
Its so much easier to keep getting money from a country that hates your skin color so much, then to just leave.
Its like Trump winning in 16 all over again, waaaaaahhhh im moving, but nobody did.
Like honestly, all this bs over the last few months has actually made me question why I even watch sports, and this is coming from a diehard fan.
Its seriously getting to the point where im losing interest, fast.
But all this will be for nothing if yall keep spending money and going to their games.
I havent gone to a pro game in years, not worth the drive, not worth the money, not worth any of it.
Fan experience is so much better at home anyways, why bother spending a few hundred just to sit in traffic, sit at mid court at best, when you could easily get a better view and experience at your own house?
Besides that, its not like any of these leagues truly give a S about the fans in general anyways, let alone the experience, unless you're rich and or a season ticket holder, other than that, they could give a s about you.
Its time to start hurting them where they really care about, dat money.
