Ratings surrounding NBA-related shows continue to fall

Sam Amico

The NBA's return has done nothing to boost the ratings for the once-popular shows that discuss the league, according to a report from Bobby Burack of OutKick.

"Sports are back, and the ratings remain alarmingly low," Burack wrote.

Burack used ESPN programs such as PTI, First Take, Around the Horn and The Jump as examples of a major ratings decline for shows that primarily discuss the NBA. (The Jump is devoted exclusively to the NBA.)

"It’s early, but this start is concerning," Burack wrote. "Remember, the NBA is the most discussed league on many of these shows. Particularly First Take, which, Thursday, spent its entire two hours on the league’s return. The NBA put its stars out front for next-day conversation. LeBron James vs. Kawhi Leonard, Lakers vs. Clippers, Zion Williamson. None of it mattered."

Twenty-two teams are resuming the season in Orlando, with many of the games being carried by national network partners ESPN/ABC and TNT.

While shows that talk about the NBA may be hurting, the games themselves are generating a decent audience, all things considered.

Through Aug. 9, seeding games on ESPN were averaging 1.39 million viewers, which was 34 percent larger than the numbers being produced by Major League Baseball games on ESPN (1.03 million).

Also, the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets on Aug. 6 averaged 1.6 million viewers on TNT -- larger than the MLB games on FOX and the PGA Championship on ESPN.

Television ratings for NBA games actually were suffering prior to the hiatus in March, according to a February report from Sports Business Daily.

But it appears the return of the league is drawing a fair share of interest despite the time of year, as TV viewership is typically down across the board in August. Also, because of circumstances, the NBA has had to schedule many of its seeding games in the early afternoon.

Self-awareness level: below zero. I think I'll stick to that weird frisbee/football combo before watching this preachy BS.

When I saw the Political BLM slogans, and kneeling I turned it off. Won't be watching.

Been a fan forever but have not watched one game. The NBA's stance on China and BLM, kneeling and Political BLM slogans drove me away. Most people struggle on 60,000 a year and they make that a game or more. If the NFL does it I am done. Guess I have to learn how to like hockey. Oh yeah watch baseball to fall asleep

Everyone going the bot route and saying the same thing. As entertainment, it's not just the game people love, its also the cheerleaders, the fans and the excitement. A bunch of dudes scrimmaging takes place at your local playground everyday. Plus, the NBA has become a touch foul pù$$y sport where all these grown men are hacking up threes like a 3 point contest. Not all teams are included in the restart and people are trying to survive and maybe want to explore other means of experience. Lastly, think of how many other sources of entertainment there are like livestreams, constant newsfeeds, and social media. Even without the political bs, which the NBA should stay out of imo but by no means HAS to, ratings will not go back up again until they fix the game, the reffing, the pacing, the camera angles, and change how we personally interact with it on our devices, virtual reality maybe. Trust me...they will be ok, they got enough rich a$$holes to keep the thing alive.

They take a knee for the 1.5 to 2.0 minute National Anthem or leave, but wear BLM and slave labor shoes? SLIKE, Slave Nike! Too stupid to know more than a headline, they sign multimillion dollar contracts with companies that use slave labor and profit from it.
There are about 14 million of us veterans you can count out of ever watching another game.
Go read the demands of BLM, and how can anyone support that?
Why you can't pay homage for 2 minutes of the National Anthem. You should be on two knees.
Six hundred and seventy thousand died in WWII!
Ninety-two thousand in Korea!
Fifty Nine Thousand in Vietnam!
Sixty Six Thousand in the Middle East, none of these counts the injured, and you can't give 2 minutes to pay your respect?
They have to have no idea what war really is? Maybe they saw a movie, but they need to go to Walter Reed for a week. Go into the sandbox and smell death, it will never leave you.
Worse is you have little respect against our country and paying honor to it.
10 unarmed blacks killed by police in 2019, that was a bad night for me in the Middle East.
315 Thousand Black on Black Murders the last fifteen years in the United States.
Where is your BLM on that? Not a word, that’s normal it seems

Was able to watch 2 games. Tonight I went to watch the Pelicans, and even though they are no going to the playoffs, Zion, Holiday, and Ingram did not play. I felt very depressed to see them not competing, or doing the job they are paid to do. They looked like female chihuahuas on the bench. I cancelled my season tickets to the Pels after they fired Williams as the coach and his wife died. Now I will not watch anything NBA related ever again. I will never watch a regular season NBA ever again.

Was always fanatical about NBA playoffs. Have not watched a single game and have no intention of watching. Cannot watch what the NBA has become.

I've been watching youtube highlights of all my favorite players (Dr. J, Dennis Rodman, Michael Jordan, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Kareem, and Larry Bird). It's so much more entertaining than watching these "scrimmages" with guys wearing these clownish outfits on a BLM court. I will be unlikely to return to the NBA or the NFL until the commissioners are replaced and these BLM policies are halted.

The foolish BLM supporters cannot think beyond kneeling. Do they really think kneeling is going to make their pathetic lives better? Start by going to colleges and getting an education. These guys already have affirmative action which allows lesser able ones to get into better colleges compared to whites or Asians. Still the number of Blacks getting college degrees are minuscule. What do these BLM activists have to say about that? And to top this off, these lazy leftists want reparations to blacks? Wow, only the most insensible and idiots will even remotely think about that.

The blacks have had around 155 years to get their lives straight but most are still poor. We owe nothing to them. If they feel discriminated then why the hell they don't leave and go to Africa? Make those African countries better. No, they would like enjoy the American life style but would not like to Thank our founding fathers because they were all White. If not for Abraham Lincoln these Blacks would still be slaves. But they have a problem with the Lincoln statue with a kneeling Black man. But they are perfectly fine kneeling for the Flag? These BLM folks are Anti American. They want the great American life style but will not pay their respect to the Flag. Had they done this in China or North Korea, they would be shot dead.

The foolish Lebron James won't criticize China for their treatment of Hong Kong why because he only cares about money.

Gone are the times where Sports was a getaway from the daily drama.

To disconnect from the drama of politics and social justice, I see my young neighbors take up new hobbies instead.

Same time last year, we would all gather to talk sports after work. Not once in the last few weeks since MLB and NBA came back on.

I for one, will never watch another NFL, NBA, or MLB game ever again. They wont get a dollar of my money or a minute of my time. I prefer UFC anyway. Dana white, for all his faults, ain't no kneeler. These teams should go find a country they DO like and go play ball for them. I'm out.

No surprise here, I use to like to watch basketball to come together as fans to celebrate the game, skill and diversity of the players and fans. Not to be preached to by a bunch of woke millionaires players and coaches on how racist we are in this terrible country that they became millionaires in. I'm going to have to find a sport that celebrates the game and skill and doesn't try to divide and denigrate the audience.

I can't watch the NBA although I have been a fan since Lou Hudson and Pete Maravich played in Atlanta when we first got the team from St. Louis. Black Lives Matter displayed in very large letters on the court did it for me. That, plus the kneeling and political statements on their jerseys, has really turned me off. The NBA is pandering to the far left. I agree black lives matter, but all lives matter. The players need to bring people together, not be divisive.

Obviously the ratings in MLB and NBA speak for themselves. I tried to watch a game and just couldn't take it. BLM, kneeling, count me out. Good luck guys.

BLM is a joke and the fact that they have (surprisingly easily) tricked a billion dollar corporation to promote their radical ideas for FREE is s stroke of genius. (You have to give them credit on that).

Adam Silver should immediately resign. After all, it is only because of his white privilege he is in charge of a group of 99% black folks. If he truly believes what he says his resignation should be today. Otherwise remove all this junk from the court as its just lip service.

The white owners of these teams should immediately donate ALL profits of the franchise to black causes. After all they did not acquire these teams through hard work--its white privilege.

I'm out.

There are a lot of people that like to watch sports to relax and enjoy high level competition. When any sport attempts to impose politics into the mix I'm out. If I want to watch political theater there are plenty of channels for that. My prediction is their ratings will never fully recover until they stop the bull crap. Over and out.

I love the game and watch "the rest of the year" too. Not anymore. I've walked away from it since it decided to be a political platform and not about sport. As an African American I appreciate the gesture of the phrase Black Lives Matter. Backing a Socialist/Marxist organization, kneeling during all of our nation's anthem, and promoting a false narrative of what's really going on out here, is a turn off. Guess I'll just have to go read a book cause it seems all of the major sports are this way and I don't care for golf.

Used to love watching NBA games until they starting kneeling.

So unbelievably disrespectful to this great country that gave them the opportunity to make millions of $ playing a children's game.

I've been a NBA fan ever since I was a kid but have to pass this year with the kneeling of the Anthem. Serving in the Navy and working on the H-60's, I respect what the players our doing but kneeling while the national anthem is playing is hard to watch. We are serving our country and protecting the seas and it's disrespectful for us wearing the uniforms. I canceled my Direct TV package to the basic channel package.

Rooster24

I can't watch it anymore either. Sports used to be a great escape from the stresses of everyday life. Now I'd rather get a colonoscopy than watch the NBA. Overpaid prima donnas complaining of social injustice. The only injustice is the amount of money they are paid in comparison to a health worker or policeman who risks their life every day. If the players hate it here so much, let's see how much money they can earn somewhere else.

the Deee

Politics have been creeping into pro sports for a while. We watch sports to escape that BS. But, to have something as political and outright stupid as BLM foisted on us by overindulged prima donnas is the breaking point. Most of us are hard working salt-of-the-Earth types. And, don't think for one second that any sports fan is a racist. We have been admiring and idolizing black men since childhood--posters, jerseys, etc. Welcome to the demise one of the most lucrative pro-black industries in the world. Way to go evil white overlords and stupid as f*ck athletic dupes!! Kobe is turning in his grave. . . Come to think of it, ya'll probably killed Kobe to clear the way for some clown like LeBron to operate as your mouthpiece.

Good, people should be cancelling their cable and getting off grid, European people are hated so why stick around to pay for all this? Take the homestead pill, focus on more important things than giving money to these people, the media hates us so stop paying for it. You paying for media keeps these ingrates in business and flapping their gums so don't complain when they do it if you keep buying cable. Its not just sports either, its ALL the media...save money and cancel it all.

I used to be a huge NBA fan but not anymore. I have not watched any games this year and will not be watching again. I have a huge network of friends that have decided that we will never watch the NBA again. I cannot stand the disrespect for our country and the ignorance of supporting a group that has Marxist views. Every time these guys kneel during our anthem they are spitting on every grave of a every soldier that fought for this country.

BLM supports communist dictators like Nikolas Maduro and hate the USA. The NBA has aligned itself with this ideology, so I am out. The hypocrisy of these players supporting communist ideology yet making millions in a capitalist country. If they hate this country so much they should go play basketball for a country like Cuba or Venezuela to see how much money they make there. They want to have it both ways by making millions while they protest the system that allows them to become millionaires.

If they really cared, they would protest against all of the black lives that are lost every day in Chicago but not by kneeling during our national anthem. Every life matters, including black lives.

God bless the USA!! Greatest country in the world.

America is showing its true colors, A whole bunch of racists, racism is still alive and well in America. Black athlete are good for entertaining you, but once they start doing better things than basketball , like helping promote social issues in this country. The real racism was started by Margaret Sanger when she started Planned Parenthood. She was a Eugenist whose main goal was to eradicate the Black Population. BLM is “Disrupting the Nuclear Family” as well - it is part of their Mission. So what do those who are opposing the BLM movement saying? They are driving the effort to Stopping the Murder Of Black Babies in the womb and Promote The Black Man - this is not a racist concept. By definition, it is not marginalizing, it is up-lifting. However, many people are misguided because they listen to a bunch of media hogwash - the BLM is killing momentum. We just wanna watch basketball without a bunch of millionaires telling us we are racist while they support the racism in China! Put “Hypocrisy” on your back and I will watch again because at least they are being honest.

Who is the "rest of the world" and how are you able to speak for the "rest of the word" on what they agree with. Did you take a poll? A survey? Talked individually to the 7+ billion folks in the world? Doubt it. I hear a lot about racism but point to one law in America that is racist in intent. Are there whites that are racist. I'm sure there are. Are there blacks who racists, i'm sure there are. In fact, what BLM promotes is reverse racism. More jobs for African Americans not because they earned it but because they are black. More scholarships. Free money, not because they earned it, but because of their race. Stop speaking so generally about racism, and point to community/state/country wide initiatives that promote racism. When you find those, actual change can happen. Since the BLM can't find those because they were removed from law back in the 60's, the BLM relies on "racism must exist" without shreds of evidence. If anything there is more reverse racism in america. Whites don't have the "White Entertainment Channel", but there is the Black Entertainment Channel. Whites can't create scholarships that limit who can apply to those who are white, but their are scholarships where only African Americans can apply. No law is out there that requires a certain amount of whites be hired, but there are laws that require schools and other organizations to meet certain diversity numbers which means relaxed standards for many nonwhites. When these questions get can't be answered then surely white privilege must be correct response. I am white, but please define how white privilege gave me any advantage. Did it give me an advantage while I was studying in college and working full time to put me through school. Did it pay for advanced degree or the $100K I had to borrow to obtain it because I couldn't get scholarships to finance it and I couldn't apply for the ones limited to minorities. Did it put me in a different neighborhood where my house wasn't robbed every other weekend. The answer is it did not.

Consider the fact that out of millions of police interactions with all races across the US a majority occur without any issue. Relying on the media who gets paid by posting stories that generate clicks is not a good way to set a barometer on racism in America.

The ratings won't get any better either. That's what the NBA gets for trying to force feed BLM propaganda to middle aged white people, while calling them racists at the same time. People want to watch sports for entertainment, not to have this misguided hogwash rammed down our throats.

Maybe BLM can take on a real problem for a change, like teenage black girls having 2 or 3 babies before finishing high school, if they finish. Small wonder the streets are full of black kids looking to make a fast buck and racking up more police contacts. And the HipHop songs play on and on and......

The NBA players have put politics into the game of basketball which I would believe most people are tired of politics so that is why people like myself like to watch sports. The NBA players want to show that they are unified in the latest shooting of Jacob Blake. I respect that. However, what about all of the children getting killed in Chicago? How about the 5 year old boy who was shot at point blank range in the head by his neighbor? There are many other examples that the NBA players obviously do not care about or want to discuss. They want to be selective in what they want to be unified over. Trust me, it is just not the NBA players. It is also the news media as well. What I do hope is that when the NFL players kneel during the National Anthem that the fans just boo them just like when the FC Dallas team took a knee.
