Nuggets assign point guard Thomas to G League

Denver Nuggets point guard Isaiah Thomas has yet to play in a game this season, but that could be changing as he is closer to returning from arthroscopic hip surgery in March 2018.

Shams Charania of the Athletic reports via twitter that Thomas has been sent to the NBA G League in hopes of working his way back to Denver's NBA roster.

The guard, who hasn't played in a game in the NBA since March 22 of last year, signed a one-year free agent deal with the Nuggets last summer for the vet minimum.

Last season, he started the year with the Cavaliers as part of the blockbuster deal with the Celtics involving Kyrie Irving, and then was dealt in midseason to the Los Angeles Lakers as the Cavs realized quickly that he simply didn't fit their system.

The Nuggets were willing to take a chance knowing that he wasn't going to be able to play a good portion of the season, and are hoping to see the old Thomas, who was a two-time All-Star and at times took over games at the guard position while in Boston.

In his career, Thomas is averaging 18.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 473 games. Last season between the Cavs and Lakers, he put up 15.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 32 games.

If Thomas can get back on the court and have an impact, it will only help the Nuggets, as he will be the backup to Jamal Murray at the point guard spot.
