Source: Hawks' Young leaves Team USA camp with eye injury

Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young left Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas after experiencing an eye issue, a source told Amico Hoops.

Young had been playing on the Select Team that is helping prepare the U.S. men for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Young has been experiencing the injury for the last 7-10 days, the source said, and medication has not been providing any relief. Young is expected to have the eye examined upon his return to Oklahoma.

Young thanked USA basketball in a tweet early Thursday.

Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce is an assistant under Team USA coach Gregg Popovich, and while Team USA doctors do not believe the issue to be serious, Young discussed the situation with Pierce. They decided it was best for him to focus on his health, the source said.

Young averaged 19.1 points and 8.1 assists as a rookie and showed marked improvement in the season’s second half. He was second in the league in total assists (653 in 81 games). He finished second to Dallas Mavericks swingman Luka Doncic in Rookie of the Year voting.

The World Cup tips off at the end of the month in China. The U.S. begins play Sept. 1 vs. the Czech Republic in Shanghai.
