Bontemps: How to fix the 'broken' Cavaliers

Don McCormack

Everyone who follows the Cleveland Cavaliers has an opinion on what the team should do as the NBA's trade deadline approaches.

Even we here at Amico Hoops often opine on what moves general manager KobyAltman should make in at attempt to right The Good Ship Cavalier, which has been taking on water pretty much starting with the Christmas Day loss at Golden State.

However, a Tim Bontemps of the Washington Post took that premise to an extreme, suggesting four trades for Altman to make in a story topped with this headline:

"The Cavaliers are broken. They should make all four of these trades to get on track."

The weeks leading up to the trade deadline (Feb. 8, this season) are indeed the NBA's silly season, but no team in the history of the league -- especially one that tipped off the season with aspirations of winning a championship -- has ever been undertaken.

Still, though, opinions are like... bellybuttons -- everyone has one -- and Bontemps' proposals, all with an eye to fixing (in his words) the broken Cavaliers, are certainly interesting to read through.

In summary, here at the four deals Bontemps suggests, resulting in the Cavaliers trading pretty much everyone of note besides LeBronJames:

  • 1. Channing Frye, Iman Shumpert and Cleveland’s 2023 second round pick to the Sacramento Kings for George Hill.
  • 2. Kevin Love, Cedi Osman and a second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons for Tobias Harris and Avery Bradley.
  • 3. Isaiah Thomas, Derrick Rose and the Miami Heat’s 2020 second-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for Dewayne Dedmon.
  • 4. J.R. Smith and Cleveland’s 2018 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for DeMarre Carroll.

Those moves suggested by Bontemps would result in seven players and four draft choices being swapped out for five players coming in.

It would also have the Cavaliers coming out of it with a starting lineup of James and Harris at forward, Dedmon at center and Hill and Bradley in the backcourt, with the second team consisting of DwyaneWade, KyleKorver, Carroll and either TristanThompson or JeffGreen.

Could all this come to fruition? Sure. Anything is possible. Then again, it's possible Bigfoot will be banging on my front door come the witching hour.

Will all this happen? Probably not, but at least portions of it could.

It remains for be seen.
