Should we have a functionality/formatting request thread?
Mike seemed to suggest that he's working with SI to make this place more like what we're used to. So what do we need ?
Basically we need a message board. I don't know how else to say it.
This is not set up intuitively and is NOT set up to guide you to the messages of the users. It is constantly trying to push you back to main page.
It'd be great to see who had the last reply and when it occurred

What Kamm said.. Just finding threads, the posts to that thread, and the replies, are a challenge. I feel like I'm flipping through a digital tabloid to find poster's content.
I just posted, and I have no idea of where it went :-)
Said this in a reply in an earlier post so it might not be seen there. Solution to constantly going to News then Community:
Just figured out instead of going back to News and then Community, when you scroll down to the bottom of the comments on that topic there are two directions you can go, Featured or Community, it defaults to Featured, but if you switch it to Community it shows the remaining topics in a continuous scroll.
Piggybacking off of what Kamm said, basically an entire rework. The site currently set up isn't a message board. It is a never ending ad for more articles. No conversation. Basically a bunch of comments that you have to work to read.
Gang, I appreciate this idea. We'll keep hammering away on stuff ... (I hope you see this :) )
Fish, have you seen Magickian's comments in you "New Home" thread at the 247 site? You should check it out. It would be awesome if we could click "Community" from either Featured or News and it would go to the same place. And it would be super awesome if when you clicked Community you ended in a message board like what Magickian is talking about. I know that would look different than the other maven sites, but it would mean more clicks for SI. I think many folks just won't migrate from a message board to something that operates more like a "comment section".
IMO this is fine during times like these when there is little to discuss. Once there is lots more to talk about it'll be pretty impossible to keep up with all the conversations going on. One thing I like about this format is that side convos can be kept as a side convos with replies on a comment. Those will be MUCH easier to keep up with (or ignore). There have been many times, even with quotes, that I couldn't remember what someone was talking about and had to keep clicking "original post" to remind myself on the backstory of a post on the old message board. New way is just to read a reply to an original thought and you can just scroll down to see what is actually being discussed if you forgot.
Biggest issue with that is there is no way of knowing if a reply is made currently. Some type of highlighting a post that gets un-highlighted when there is no new content needs to happen with maybe a quick "go to the newest post in thread" type clickable button.
This is brutal..
@fifteenth Both Fish and Maven are paying attention to this thread and taking it all into consideration so I think posting and offering the suggestions here is already helping.
Is this an issue with the si site itself not really hosting or providing a true message board with things Fish doesn't have access to with this "article" type comment system or is this a we don't have anyone that can do web work on what they can change?
I don't hate this so far...TBD
I dislike this version of it, but if there is the ability to change up some of the things that are in this thread, I'd be willing to give it a shot. We wouldn't have the sticky posts and posts that promote Fish's articles (not needed when they will be shown with their own comments in the Featured section), that takes away from a lot of the discussion in what would be pure community driven content. There would still be headaches in this format, not gonna lie, but some of the things the other format didn't provide, would be provided here.
So I like notifications but then I clicked on the notification and it didn't take me directly to the reply which is disappointing.
Text editing is something I wanted pretty badly on the old site and then got it at the very end. Not having that here will go back into the "aw shucks" bin. Text editing like bold, underline, italics and color changing functionality is what I'm talking about.
Editing posts is also still a feature that is seemingly here, but is not working. Unless I'm doing it wrong.
@pete 's comment that si/maven has message board capabilities has me hopeful that somthing better than just figuring out how to make use of the current format is possible.
I would think more in terms of business model. In terms of web work, anything can be done.
In the 3 bar view, I'm trying to figure out the reason for the 2 spaces. The first is after the first topic, second is after the 7th topic. They seem unnecessary and require more scrolling. For me, changing that would be good too.
