In a private hangar at the one-runway Hawthorne Municipal Airport, on the same block of greater Los Angeles as the headquarters of the private space-exploration startup SpaceX, Nike held its annual Skills Academy from July 25-27. The sneaker giant custom-built a three-court basketball complex to host 60 of the nation's top high school players and 21 of the top collegians, and a handful of NBA players—most notably LeBron James—dropped by to either speak to or scrimmage with the amateurs.
