New Orleans Hornets rookie point guard Austin Rivers re-injured his right ankle during a preseason game against the Miami Heat on Friday night. Rivers' leg buckled over awkwardly near the end of the third quarter and he departed immediately for the locker room. The Hornets announced shortly thereafter that he had sprained his right ankle and that he would not return to the game. He left with six points, four assists and one rebound in 24 minutes.

Rivers, 20, sprained the same right ankle during a Monday preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks. An MRI on Tuesday was negative and he was cleared to play.

The No. 10 pick in the 2012 draft underwent surgery back in June to clean up bone spurs in his right ankle. He entered Friday's game with preseason averages of 7.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in six games.

New Orleans opens its regular season against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.
