Video: Nuggets' JaVale McGee hits first three-pointer of his career
By Rob Mahoney
JaVale McGee has attempted just five three-pointers over the course of his career, and I suspect that only one of them was anything resembling a measured try. The rest were surely wild flings as the buzzer sounded, set up by random chance more than any design.
But Tuesday night's game against the Clippers not only brought McGee's first legitimate shot from beyond the arc in his five-year career, it also represented the first time that a coach has drawn up a play looking for just such a result. Nuggets head coach George Karl fully gave into the experimental nature of the regular season by drawing up what appears to be a set designed to get McGee a look beyond the arc. Corey Brewer throws in a prescribed down screen for good measure, but it's hardly needed; the Clippers' Lamar Odom didn't even bother trying to contest McGee's catch-and-shoot try. It's an astonishing play, really, and here's hoping we see this exact sequence again sometime this season -- complete with the latest in McGee's post-play celebrations.
