Spurs G Devin Vassell to Undergo Knee Surgery; Timetable for Return?

The San Antonio Spurs are set to be without arguably their best player.

San Antonio Spurs standout guard Devin Vassell is set to undergo surgery on his left knee that will keep him sidelined for an indefinite amount of time, the team announced Thursday.

Here's the full statement:

"San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Riley J. Williams III at HSS in New York on Wednesday, Jan. 11. The team will provide updates on his return to the court as appropriate."

Vassell, 22, has missed nine games this season due to various reasons, with the knee being a primary issue. He's averaging 19.4 points, four rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals this season while shooting 44.5 percent from the floor and 40.4 percent from deep.

Despite the knee issue, Vassell has managed to reach the double-digit scoring mark in all but one game this season. He's reached double figures in 18 straight games.

The Spurs (12-26) will now rely on Keldon Johnson and Josh Richardson on the wings. Stanley Johnson could also see his playing time increase due to Vassell's absence, as he's proven to be a key depth piece off the bench for coach Gregg Popovich.

San Antonio has lost three straight games and will look to get back in the win column on Friday at the AT&T Center against the Detroit Pistons (11-30). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.
