Spurs' Rival Mavs Trade for Nets Star Kyrie Irving in Blockbuster Deal

The San Antonio Spurs watched as their Southwest Division rival Dallas Mavericks made a blockbuster trade Sunday, acquiring star guard Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets.

As the San Antonio Spurs continue to tread the waters of trade rumors as the deadline approaches, they had to stand and watch as their in-state rival Dallas Mavericks made a tsunami-like deal on Sunday.

The Mavs have traded guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forward Dorian Finney-Smith and multiple future draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for superstar guard Kyrie Irving and veteran forward Markieff Morris, per multiple reports.

Dallas now adds Irving, who requested a trade from the Nets just two days before Sunday's deal went through, and will pair him alongside Mavs star Luka Dončić to form what could arguably be the league's best backcourt.

The Spurs had been rumored to be in trade talks with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers for a potential three-team deal, but it now remains to be seen how San Antonio can get involved with other teams after Sunday's mega-deal.

The Spurs had already faced the Nets for the two and only meetings between the two teams during the regular season, but will now have to battle with Dončić, Irving and the Mavs three more times the rest of the season.

The next matchup between the two Southwest Division rivals is set for Thursday, Feb. 23 in Dallas. The Spurs will then host the Mavs on Wednesday, March 15 before the regular-season finale in Dallas on Sunday, April 9.
