Russell Wilson says he'd consider playing baseball if traded to Mariners
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said he would consider playing professional baseball if he were traded to the Seattle Mariners. In an interview on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Wilson said he grew up wanting to play both sports, but acknowledged that it would be "tough to play."
Asked what would happen if he were traded to the Mariners, Wilson said he would "definitely consider" playing. Wilson's rights are currently owned by the Texas Rangers and he has made appearances at the team's spring training facility in recent years.
He played baseball in high school and was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 41st round of the 2007 MLB draft before going to North Carolina State to play quarterback.
Wilson was drafted again as a second baseman by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the 2010 draft and played second base in Single-A ball for two seasons with Tri-City and Asheville.
The Rangers acquired Wilson from the Rockies in December 2013 in the Major League Baseball Rule 5 draft. Wilson is entering the final year of the rookie contract he signed after being selected in the third round in 2012.
Although he and the Seahawks have yet to agree to a contract extension, NFL.com reported in January that Seattle plans to make WIlson the highest-paid quarterback in the league.
