No. 4 seed Kei Nishikori upset by Benoit Paire at U.S. Open

No. 4 seed Kei Nishikori, the runner up at last year’s U.S. Open, was upset by Benoit Paire in the first round on Monday. 

Paire beat Nishikori in five sets: 6–4, 3–6, 4–6, 7–6, 6–4. 

Nishikori is the first man to reach the U.S. Open final one year and be eliminated in the first round the following year, according to ESPN.

Nishikori’s runner-up finish last year was his best Grand Slam result of his career. He lost to Marin Cilic in straight sets in the final. 

Nishikori was the second highly ranked player to fall in the first round on Monday. Ana Ivanovic, the No. 7 seed on the women’s side, lost to Dominika Cibulkova
