The Broncos defense was the story of Super Bowl 50's first half, sacking Cam Newton three times and forcing three fumbles.

The game’s first touchdown came from the Broncos defense; linebacker Von Miller came around the edge and sacked Cam Newton, knocking the ball out of his hand into the end zone. Defensive end Malik Jackson recovered the fumble to put Denver ahead 10–0.

Later in the first quarter, Shane Ray recorded another strip sack of Newton, though the fumble was recovered by Carolina.

A couple of plays later, the defense got to Newton again on a third-and-8.

The Panthers edged closer to the Broncos, but Denver stymied Carolina’s rally by forcing and recovering yet another fumble.

The Broncos ended the first half with another sack of Cam Newton.
