Report: Cam Newton 'Considering' Foot Surgery, Unlikely to Return to Panthers

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is "considering surgery to repair the Lisfranc injury in his foot," according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Newton would face an 8-10 week recovery time due to the surgery, per Rapoport. He would hope to be healthy and ready to participate in offseason activities by March 2020.

Carolina's QB since 2011 is "highly unlikely" to return to the Panthers next season, per Rapoport. Newton is owed $18.6 million in 2020. 

Newton has not played since Week 2 due to the Lisfranc injury. Carolina placed Newton on Injured Reserve on Nov. 6, shutting him down for the 2019 season. Newton struggled in his first two games of 2019 as he completed just 56.2% of passes while failing to throw a touchdown.

Backup QB Kyle Allen has been solid in place of Newton in 2019. Allen has tossed nine touchdown passes in six starts, entering Sunday with a 5–1 record.

Carolina enters Sunday's matchup with the Packers second in the NFC South at 5–3. Kickoff from Lambeau Field in Green Bay is slated for 4:25 ET.
