Richard Sherman to apologize to Baker Mayfield for lying about the handshake
Handshake gate may finally be coming to an end today. Richard Sherman appeared on The Pat McAfee Show to convey his regret of accusing Baker Mayfield for not shaking his during the coin toss of their Monday night matchup.
Sherman orginally claimed that Mayfield did not shake his hand at the coin toss, thus took it as a sign of disrespect to him and the game of football. However, for whatever reason Sherman concocted this story telling reporters about a handshake that did in fact happen.
Here is the full quote Sherman said to McAfee about apologizing.
"It’s definitely my bad, I never want anybody to deal with some sh-t that — I mean some some stuff — that they didn’t do. And so, you know, the questions that he’s gonna get and the annoying, nonsense questions about some stuff that happened in a game that’s already been done, you know, sure he’ll get an apology for that. I’ll probably reach out to him via text or social media to actually get a hold of him and talk to him in person, I mean on the phone. But, yeah, because that sucks. . . . But yeah, yeah. He definitely deserves an apology, and my bad on that.”
The thought process behind this is very confusing as to why Sherman would lie about this. He did mention that he felt disrespected and that the game was disrespected by Mayfield, so it could be he just doesn't like the way conducts himself.
“I did feel the disrespect. . . . I felt disrespect and at the end of the day that’s all the story was, really" Sherman on being asked if he could've phrased the handshake better. So it is clear that there was some animosity with Mayfield beforehand and it just intensified in the game. For all we know, Sherman just made it up in his head to fuel him for the game. To psyche himself out, which if he did it clearly worked.
Whatever the case may be with this, Baker Mayfield deserves an apology because he was been dragged through the mud for something he didn't do. Hopefully handshake gate is behind us because I do have to agree with Richard Sherman that this is a story that is getting quite overblown.
