Watch: Reggie Wayne makes what could be the catch of the year ... in the preseason
Receiver Reggie Wayne made two amazing catches in the Indianapolis Colts' 20-12 Sunday win over the New York Giants, but it's the second that will be seen on pro football highlights for a very, very long time. Wayne, the Colts' 13-year veteran who has made six Pro Bowls and enjoyed an impressive rebound season in 2012 with rookie quarterback Andrew Luck, made an impressive one-handed grab of a Luck pass with five minutes left in the first quarter, but he was just warming up.
With 2:50 left in the first quarter, Wayne brought in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Luck, and even after you watch it a couple of times, it's not exactly clear how he was able to do it. Luck underthrew Wayne, and the ball sailed into the hands of Giants safety Aaron Ross. It appeared to be a surefire reversal of fortune for the prodigious signal-caller but for the fact that Ross couldn't hang on, and the ball went flying into the air.
Then ... well, this happened.
And here's the full play (via SB Nation):
"I deserve an interception for that one," Luck said after the game. "I was talking to [backup quarterback Matt] Hasselbeck, and he said 'No, no you don't deserve an interception. For all the times you'll get burned in the rest of your career, you always take the ones that bounce your way.' But it's Reggie Wayne. Good things seem to happen when you throw the ball up in his general zip code, area code."
Indeed. Ross was irritated by the events of the play, as you might imagine.
"I knew it was a pick," he said. "I saw it leave [Luck's] hands and then as soon as I looked up, the lights just took the ball away. I couldn’t see anymore and that’s what kind of made me fall. As soon as I fell back, it hit my hands and it kind of shocked me. So it just popped up and I turned around and Reggie was catching the ball. One of those plays you can’t get back."
Meanwhile, Wayne was humble about the fact that head coach Chuck Pagano didn't seem surprised that his best receiver was able to do such a thing.
"I guess that’s a credit. I’m just out there playing ball. I just want to make plays. I want to do whatever I can to help this team succeed. That was something that had to be done. I would have liked it to be a lot easier, but it’s the catch. Man, it never comes easy."look
