GAMEDAY Open Thread/Live Blog: Bears vs. Raiders | Week 5

Akiem Hicks returned to the lineup and then was out on the first series with an arm injury.

Pip pip and cheerio.

The Chicago Bears kicked off in London at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium against the 2-2 Oakland Raiders, trying to go 4-1 before their bye.

Khalil Mack tries to make a statement against the team that traded him while Chase Daniel is trying to do what Mitchell Trubisky had trouble doing, and get the offense into the end zone. With Trubisky injured and ruled out, Daniel makes his third Bears start.

Here are the observations from today's game.

First quarter: Teams about to stand for The Star Spangled Banner and God Save the Queen.

  • Roquan Smith misplayed the cutback on second down. He's got to be up near the line and not 5 yards back. That's how the Bears stuffed the Vikings' cutback.
  • Raiders' first drive working because they went run and then play action.
  • Nick Williams down on the field.
  • And Akiem Hicks hurt left arm on same play. Appeared to  dislocate his elbow on Khalil Mack's helmet.
  • What a shock. Richie Incognito with a dirty, late play. Only Vontaze Burfict is dirtier. Took them out of field goal range.
  • By forcing punt Bears made it 14 straight games without allowing a TD on opening drive.
  • Charles Leno personally kills the drive. His third holding penalty of the year and then a sack allowed on the next play. He's really off to a poor start this season.
  • Raiders use of swing passes was predicted here. They did it to Broncos. Trevathan stumbled on first down run by Jacobs and Dix did a pathetic job of tackling.
  • David Montgomery with a fantastic third-down catch, one hand, then Chase finds Allen Robinson at the 49 on a route Mitchell Trubisky loves to look for with Robinson.
  • Josh Jacobs out of game after hit.
  • Hicks questionable to return.
  • Raiders offensive line has Bears on their heels. The guard/center blocking leaves way too much room for the cutback. It's what Minnesota wanted to do but couldn't. Now Raiders aren't having any problem doing it. End of quarter no score with Raiders threatening.
  • Second quarter: Danny Trevathan and Roquan Smith no factor so far against the run, and Eddie Goldman being moved off the ball. The Bears look like the weary team. Maybe there was something more to what Oakland did, going over early and staying all week.
  • Touchdown run by Josh Jacobs yet another example of Eddie Goldman getting manhandled on a double team. 90-yard TD drive, first rushing TD allowed by the Bears.
  • Chase Daniel interception was ridiculous. Looked as bad as anything Mitchell Trubisky has done. On the previous play, Tarik Cohen needed to cut that run in earlier. He had an opening.
  • Nick Williams injury wasn't serious and he's back.
  • Kyle Fuller holding on third-down stop gives the Raiders new life.
  • Bears down 14-0 on another rushing TD, biggest deficit they've faced since being down 14-0 to Patriots last year.
  • This is like watching the Cardinals game last year. The Bears better hope it ends the same way.

Inactives: Bears defensive end Akiem Hicks returned to the lineup Sunday after a one-game absence with a knee injury suffered Sept. 23 against Washington.

Also active after missing last week's game against Minnesota were linebacker Roquan Smith and guard Kyle Long. Long was out with a hip injury and Smith for what the team vaguely labeled a "personal issue."

As expected, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is inactive with a left shoulder injury. Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel (concussion), guard Ted Larsen (knee) and defensive end Bilal Nichols (hand) are inactive. Other inactives are  cornerback Duke Shelley, linebacker Joel Iyiegbuniwe (hamstring) and wide receiver Riley Ridley

The Bears elevated quarterback Tyler Bray from the practice squad on Saturday and he'll serve as backup to quarterback Chase Daniel. Tight end Bradley Sowell was waived to make room for Bray on the roster.
