Broncos vs. Bucs Open Thread/Live Blog | Week 3

Chad Jensen

Once again, the Denver Broncos are underdogs. At home.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 6-point favorites at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday. The Broncos have been underdogs in each game this season but so far, although they've lost each game, they've covered the spread in both.

This week, it's another future Hall-of-Fame quarterback rolling into town and one that frankly hasn't had a ton of success at Mile High. Tom Brady might be in a new football city, sporting a new uniform, but he's the same quarterback, at least, he is mentally.

Physically, the 43-year-old Brady might have lost some of the mustard on his heater but he's still got that football brain that has seen everything the NFL has to throw at a QB over the last two decades. And this time, the collection of talent around him has been significantly upgraded.

The Broncos won't be able to play coverage on Sunday and hope to keep Brady in check. He'll sit back in the pocket and dissect the Broncos rookie cornerbacks with the dink and dunk. Vic Fangio has a plan. Here's to hoping it works.

Meanwhile, it's the Jeff Driskel show for the Broncos offense. With no Courtland Sutton and a banged-up Jerry Jeudy, Driskel will have to feed other playmakers but the good news is, there are more than one or two.

Tight end Noah Fant and running back Melvin Gordon need to have a big game and don't be surprised to see rookie wideout KJ Hamler make a few splash plays. If Driskel can throw it around on Sunday like he did in Pittsburgh, the Broncos will have a chance.

What to Watch For

Denver owns a 9-8 all-time overall record and 6-7 regular-season record against Brady. Denver is the only NFL team with an overall winning record against Brady.

• With a win on Sunday, the Broncos can extend their win streak over Tampa Bay to five games (2004-pres.).

• Noah Fant needs 100 receiving yards to become the fifth Broncos pass-catcher to reach 800 career receiving yards by his 19th game, needs one touchdown reception to match Demaryius Thomas (6) for the second-most touchdown catches in team history through his first 19 games, needs one receiving touchdown to be come the first Broncos tight end to record at least one receiving score in three consecutive games since Julius Thomas in 2013.

• Melvin Gordon needs 105 receiving yards to become the eighth active running back with 2,000 receiving yards in his career, needs one scrimmage touchdown (rush or rec.) to become the fifth active running back with 50 combined scores.

• Jerry Jeudy needs 28 receiving yards to pass Glyn Milburn (145, 1993) for the fifth-most receiving yards in team history through a player's first three games, needs 32 receiving yards to pass Demaryius Thomas (149, 2010) for the fourth-most receiving yards in team history through a player's first three games, needs 50 receiving yards to pass Vance Johnson (167, 1985) for the third-most receiving yards in team history through a player's first three games.

If the Broncos don’t make adjustments after half then I have serious doubts about the coaching staff. They have to do something different

Subtle little push off by Miller there. Would have been a hell of a catch, but could have drawn a flag.

The defense continues to just give up 7, 8 and 9 yards. It’s mistakes by TB that is keeping them from matching down the fields.

Lance Sanderson

Bucs CB Sean Murphy-Bunting is out. This is a huge drive for the Broncos. Gotta target that void quickly and often.

Fant with a pair of drops. Can't have that especially when you are backed up.

Studlee14

Do the Broncos need to install some new jugs machines at the facility?

Lance Sanderson
Lance Sanderson

And that's why. Gives up a 3rd and long, bucs bring heavy pressure, Driskel holds the ball too long. Safety.

Studlee14
Studlee14

Holding the ball too long in your own end zone. Driskel has tonedeaf pocket awareness

We cough up a safety for the second consecutive week. We’re a mess...

This might be the worst iteration of the Broncos since Manning retired... and that's saying something.

Driskel ... Kiss your NFL career good bye...

Good defensive series there. The penalty helps, but when you need a big stop you get it quickly. Nice tackling by Jewell and Ojemudia. Still wish the rookie would start bringing his arms with him when he hits.

jimtaylor
jimtaylor

Ojemudia has a lot to work on but he seems to be learning from his mistakes and isn't afraid to take on Gronk which is impressive.

The defense got a rare stop on third down. The offense has to get a TD here. Or the game is done. And probably the season

Stick a fork in the Broncos.

At this point you can only laugh at how bad we are lmao

3rd and 2. No trust in Gordon?

jimtaylor

Another poor call on a winnable down. Rolling out has gone so well this game, so why not do it again? Right? Instead of giving the RB you paid $10 million to win those types of situations or using a short pass like what worked at the end of the half. Nope, let's just roll out and get a sack or incompletion again.

Studlee14
Studlee14

who does Shurmur think his quarterback is? Because it's definitely not Jeff Driskel

Can't say I've seen NFL qbs fail to throw the ball very often.

The only thing this team is good at is run defense. Everything else we suck at. This team is far worse than last years.

3 drops now. Fant come on bro

Go figure Driskel holding the ball to get sacked. Gotta recognize that pressure and get rid of it.

Couple of coverage sacks. It works. Great job on the back end.

That was actually really good coverage by Jewell.

Know it was a coverage sack, but hopefully that does something for Chubbs psyche

Lance Sanderson
Lance Sanderson

Driskel focusing on Fant can be a good thing, but not if he's gonna laser focus and miss David. Caught a break there.

Lance Sanderson
Lance Sanderson

Well the recipe to beating Denver is easy right now. Bring the house and attack the OL. Driskel can't do it all by himself. He hasn't been good, but my god the offensive line has done him absolutely no favors today.

kisamefishfry
kisamefishfry

$5 says Fangio's response is "They have to block better."

jimtaylor
jimtaylor

mark schlereth nails it on the head, "put your players in a position to fail and don't be surprised when they fail." I blame the play-calling more than the blocking. Schumer has not adjusted at all. He doesn't understand his players or their talent. Clearly. He keeps putting them in a spot to fail and they're failing.

Thomas Hall
Thomas Hall

Driskel was awful today, but the Broncos defense was pretty bad too.

Rypien dictating things at the LOS. That's fun

Rypien should have started this game. Clearly he has a far better skill set for dealing with a blitzing defense.

Studlee14
Studlee14

Rypien making much quicker decisions. He doesn't have the great arm strength, but he looks accurate on these short quick routes

Even though I could have watched this game and would have if Drew Lock was playing as it was broadcast in FL, I could not bear the agony. I told a friend who is a loyal Bucs fan that with the losses of several Pro-bowl players and Lock out for awhile, I knew it was going to be a hopeless cause. So, I spent the afternoon in other pursuits. Seeing the score and reading the play by play analysis, I am glad that I did. Will Bortles take the helm next week?
