Since it's the bye week, the Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey has his lone press conference during the year, short of a monumental move such as firing the head coach or a massive trade. It's the sole opportunity to get some questions at least asked of the head of the Browns front office that might give some insight to the direction of the team. There were a few subjects that could've been asked and addressed.

Maybe these questions are just too far in the weeds and specific, but they felt more important than some of the topics discussed in terms of understanding what this team is doing both now and for the future.

Why haven't J.C. Tretter and Joe Schobert had contract extensions done to this point and what are the plans for them going forward?

Especially when considering the deal to move Austin Corbett in a trade to the Los Angeles Rams, the Browns' other real center options include Eric Kush, currently starting at right guard, Wyatt Teller, who is a career guard but they believe can snap and then Justin McCray. Seemingly, moving Corbett should make it more likely that the Browns extend Tretter who is one of the better centers in the league this year and is scheduled to be a free agent.

Meanwhile, Schobert is a top-three player on this defense and one of the top ten linebackers in the league. He is also scheduled to be a free agent after the season.

What is the status of Drew Forbes? Since the team went through the trouble to get him able eligible to return from injured reserve, is that the plan. and if so, when will that happen? Does the organization view him ultimately as a tackle?

The Browns went to the trouble of cutting Greg Robinson only to re-sign him a day later in order to make it so Forbes would be eligible to be designated for return this year, notable for a late round rookie. Had they not done that, he'd be out for the year. Forbes looks like he might be the in-house favorite to be the long-term right tackle replacing Chris Hubbard, whose contract makes it easy to move him after this season, hopefully in a trade.

Where is David Njoku in his recovery? Will he be ready to return by week 10? And will he ultimately require surgery after the season?

The injury to Njoku was a huge loss, particularly now as the team has been struggling in the red zone. Njoku suffered a broken wrist in the game against the New York Jets, suffering damage to his scaphoid. He's technically eligible to return for week ten.

Njoku also opted not to have surgery so he could return this year. It could heal properly and not require surgery, but it also might require surgery after the season to more permanently deal with the issue.

It's a little disappointing that these topics weren't covered as they are questions only the general manager can give a firm answer on. Forbes might help this season, but it's also a long-term projection. Meanwhile, Schobert and Tretter's futures will shape the team both now in for the future.
