Cleveland Browns: First preseason game puts spotlight on areas of concern

The Cleveland Browns were clearly better then Washington Redskins in their first preseason game, but the game did highlight some areas of concern such as the offensive line and secondary.

Although the Cleveland Browns were able to soundly defeat the Washington Redskins in their first preseason game, it highlighted areas of concern for the Browns going forward. And surprisingly enough, it wasn't defensive tackle depth where Devaroe Lawrence in particular looked very good last night.

The issues for the Browns were the offensive line and the secondary. Eric Kush was functional but relatively average. Austin Corbett did not have a great game at center. Kyle Kalis left the game with a concussion. Kendall Lamm struggled.

No one really looked very good in the game and the Redskins defensive line isn't full of dominant players that are just going to give teams a difficult time blocking. And many of the issues were technical failures by Browns failures.

It certainly looks like Kush is a heavy favorite to be the right guard for the Browns because his pass protection is at least solid and keeping Baker Mayfield upright is the most important job they have.

The secondary struggled throughout the game, particularly at safety. The team is relying heavily on Damarious Randall, who's agent should be thrilled with what he saw last night. There were massive coverage breakdowns and a lot of issues in closing holes in coverage.

Some of this is due to the fact the Browns have some rookies out there like Greedy Williams and Sheldrick Redwine who were both victimized, but they have real reason to be concerned about the safety position.

With corner, they have a lot of players that have proven they can do the job at an NFL level. Safety, they really don't. Jermaine Whitehead, Eric Murray, Juston Burris, etc. It's Damarious Randall doing a ton of the heavy lifting. And if this doesn't improve quickly, the Browns may go ahead and limit how much they use safeties, instead opting for more corners on the field.

It's one game. A lot can change. Players can improve. But for all the good things the Browns had happen last night and they had a lot of thing to be thrilled with, the offensive line and safety position are areas to monitor and it wouldn't be a surprise to see them make a move to get help at either.
