Reinforcements are coming

The Cleveland Browns added a handful of players through trades and waiver claims right before the season started, so when they took on the Tennessee Titans, most of them were unable to contribute. That should change quickly and it remains to be seen how much of an impact it will, it at least means having more options.

The problem with roster shuffling right before the season is that players aren't acclimated to their new team's scheme and often can't contribute immediately. So when the Cleveland Browns took on the Tennessee Titans, they had new acquisitions Wyatt Teller, Taywan Taylor and Ricky Seals-Jones all inactive, understandably. The only two that were active were KhaDarel Hodge and Justin McCray. McCray, who had plenty of experience playing for offensive line coach James Campen with the Green Bay Packers, was pressed into duty after Greg Robinson's ejection and Kendall Lamm's injury.

Whether it's this week against the New York Jets or the Los Angeles Rams the following week, the Browns are going to be able to start using these guys and hopefully reap the benefits of adding them. Taylor in particular has to get out there quickly because he and Hodge are on a clock with Antonio Callaway coming off suspension week five, unless someone goes down with an injury.

Wyatt Teller can backup three interior spots, may be in line to contribute more down the road this season. That should also mean the Browns avoid a situation where they only have seven active offensive linemen, which became an issue Sunday when the Browns were down to the five healthy bodies they had left.

Ricky Seals-Jones can give them another body at tight end, hopefully be able to contribute to improve the depth behind David Njoku. Freddie Kitchens at least suggested it was a possibility that Jones could contribute as a blocking back.

The other impact this has is changing who the Browns can have inactive on gameday. As an example, of the 46 players the Browns had active for the Titans game, ten of them were defensive backs. Realistically, everyone who was active was out of necessity. With the bizarre exception of Genard Avery, they basically had the 46 guys who could play that first game.

It's not like these guys are necessarily going to change the fortunes of the Cleveland Browns immediately, but Teller has the potential to be a starter down the road. Taylor has the ability to be a spark on offense because he's a tremendous athlete that can create yards in space, but he has to be better in terms of his hands and simply executing his assignments.

At the very least, they provide some additional options as functioning parts of the roster, which should begin now.
