Cleveland Browns vs Indianapolis Colts Live Game Thread

Shawn Stevenson

The Cleveland Browns (3-1) are set to host the Indianapolis Colts (3-1) at FirstEnergy Stadium for their week five matchup. The Browns are coming off a huge road win against the Dallas Cowboys and off to their best start since 2001. Yet there are still questions surrounding the team, how will the offense produce with Nick Chubb on short term IR and will the defense find consistency. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has rolled off three straight wins and will face a very stout defense against his opponent.

The Indianapolis Colts are on a three game winning streak as well and is in control of the AFC South. The Colts are solid team across the board but still suffered numerous injuries to starters and will be without two key contributors on both sides of the ball this week. Arguably the biggest matchup of the game is the number one defense versus the Browns top rushing attack. This game is shaping up to be a major battle in the trenches.

The challenge for the Browns will be compensating missing Larry Ogunjobi in the middle of their defense against an imposing Colts front including Quenton Nelson and Ryan Kelly.

For the Colts, they came in with a relative strength on the offensive line that suddenly is missing their starting left tackle in Anthony Costanzo. Le'Raven Clark will likely have the honor of trying to stop Myles Garrett in this game.

The Colts will also be down their star linebacker Darius Leonard. Along with DeForest Buckner and Xavier Rhodes, he's a top three defender that creates a pretty big hole in the middle of their defense.

Watch the Cleveland Browns Tailgate Show live at 2:30PM for all the information about this week's matchup. Stay tuned throughout the game for live updates.

Ronnie Harrison in locker room. Harrison Bryant in medical tent. Both being evaluated for concussions.

Sheldrick Redwine comes in and immediately capitalizes on Myles Garrett pressure with an interception.

Jarvis Landry with his second wide open drop of the game and the Browns have to punt again.

It would've easily gone for the first down on 3rd and 7. Brutal plays. Still, the Browns are up 2 scores.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Mayfield tried to go for the corner route to Hooper off play-action. Great throw, but an almost impossible catch to make.

Myles Garrett gets pressure on a bizarre drop back by Rivers. He throws it to no one and it gets called intentional grounding for a safety.

Browns back up by 2 scores and get the ball.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

That was the first punt for the Browns this game. Colts start at their own 4.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Then Beckham drops a hitch. Sadly, Njoku appeared to be wide open in the middle of the field.

Browns are forced to punt. That sucked.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

They ran a naked boot and Buckner was chasing Mayfield... but he hit Landry right in the hands with space... couldn't catch it.

Browns enter the 4th quarter with the ball in Colts territory with 2nd and 5. They need to find a way to get points.

Pete Smith

It's not pretty but much like with Washington, the running game is getting better as the game rolls along.

After a jet sweep to Beckham that goes backward... Mayfield fits a laser into the hole for a 1st down.

Mayfield finds Njoku for his first catch of the game to move the chains. Hopefully they can get some momentum and just wear on the Colts defense.

Browns find some room to run the ball. Good open field tackle by Rock Ya-Sin

Pete Smith

Donovan Peoples-Jones with another mediocre kick return.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Browns managed to force 4th down in no small part due to a Colts hold.

The Browns are running stunts and finding ways to move guys around to make up for their lack of defensive tackles.

Blankenship good from 37. Only down one score with 4 minutes left in the third. The Browns need a sustained drive to give the defense a break and they need more points if they are going to win this game.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Jordan Elliott is now in the medical tent. Fortunately Sheldon Richardson is on the field.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Sheldon Richardson in the medical tent, which would be really bad news if he can't go. Colts immediately gash Browns up the middle.

They are short on bodies... currently just having Jordan Elliott, Vincent Taylor and Joey Ivie available. Their ends may have to help inside.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Wyatt Teller gets ruled out

The Browns fail on special teams. Then Jedrick Wills gets beat badly for a sack, fumble. Then Mayfield doesn't see a linebacker and they turn it over. Not a great turn of events for the Browns coming out of the half.

That was all AFTER Harrison got a pick six. I hope the Browns didn't make the bad assumption the game was over as they did last week.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Browns offense has been utilizing condensed formations throughout this game to isolate Beckham on the outside and shrink the defense down into the middle of the field.

On a few occasions, the Colts have been losing Browns receivers either because of mesh concepts or the holes in their defense are larger going to the outside.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Browns finish the 2nd 1st half in two weeks with a field goal, extending their lead to 10.

Colts won't have time to do anything, so long as they don't return the kickoff for a touchdown. They will get the ball in the second half.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

DeForest Buckner may be forcing SOME of the high throws. But most of it is simply Mayfield and needing to take advantage of the opportunities. His reads are great.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Once again, Mayfield misses high. 22 seconds left. 3rd & 10. 2 timeouts.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield gets the Colts on the hard count, making it 3rd and 1 as opposed to 3rd and 6.

Browns utilizing screens to make up for their running game.

Janovich gets his 2nd trap of the game, fighting for a first down.

Like last week, the Browns have run the clock down so the Colts can do nothing with it, still have timeouts to try to score here at the end of the half.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Baker misses too high trying to go to Harrison Bryant on the post. Fortunately, Xavier Rhodes dropped it. Mayfield is lucky that didn't get intercepted and the drive stays alive.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Coming out of the 2 minute warning, they go with a reverse pass where Beckham is able to connect with Hooper.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

One of the big takeaways from this game is how Rashard Higgins came into this game after being inactive the past two and he looks smooth. They haven't missed a beat and he's made a couple nice plays already.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield reads the uncovered blitz really well, dumps it off to Hunt, who gains another first down. Blitz had Mayfield dead to rights, nowhere to go and it becomes a nice gain.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Browns with 1st down and 3 minutes left... all 3 timeouts at their own 31. Plenty of time to run their offense, try to get points before the half.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Donovan Peoples-Jones has been abysmal.

2 bad kick returns
Blew an assignment at receiver
Letting the punt bounce, then getting virtually nothing on the return.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Browns force a punt, which is newsworthy.

Wyatt Teller went from probable to questionable. Not great.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Ronnie Harrison undercut an arrow route and he might have scored if he caught that ball. He covered Jack Doyle brilliantly.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Jacob Phillips was able to chase down an end around that might have gone for much more if he hadn't.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield takes advantage of what looked to be broken coverage by the Colts, finding Rashard Higgins wide open for the TD.

Higgins did a great job, settling in the hole in the zone, which made it so the safety couldn't get there.

Browns go up 17-10 and despite Mayfield leading the team in rushing yards, they have yet to punt.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

With seemingly nowhere to go with the pass or himself, Baker finds a way to escape a crowded pocket and picks up the first down himself. Up to the 15 yard-line now.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Rashard Higgins with his first catch of the game, setting up 3rd and 3.

Browns have all of their timeouts.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield missed high trying to get it to Hooper. Not sure if anyone would have caught him if he caught it.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield has made some terrific throws in this game, but he's also gotten some incredible help as well. If this catch holds up, Beckham, Landry and Hooper will all have made a tremendous catch just this half.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield threw a laser that was probably half a beat late, but Beckham makes a tremendous catch.

The Colts are challenging. They will be out of challenges for the game and if they lose, out of timeouts for the half

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Julian Blackmon, who made the tackle on Mayfield near the goal line, is questionable.

The Colts are already shorthanded at safety.

Browns pick up 3rd and 1 on a speed option to the right. They are working VERY hard for minimal gains running the ball.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Autry is back, making the tackle. D'Ernest Johnson goes nowhere for his first run.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Denico Autry, the Colts pass rushing DT is questionable.

Colts did Browns a favor kicking it out the back of the end zone for a touchback.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Olivier Vernon won the race to Rivers on that play, but both he and Garrett got Rivers to make a bad pass, forcing the Colts to settle for a field goal.

With how poorly the Browns defense is playing, field goals are wins. 10-10.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Much like with Dallas last week, when Rivers gets the ball out quickly, the Browns are pretty helpless to defend.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Rivers goes right back to the deep middle of the field... Rivers finds Ahston Dulin for another big gain. Already near the red zone.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Myles Garrett on the left this drive... got pressure on 2nd down. They threw a screen behind him that exploited the soft middle of the defense, but that time, he forced a bad check down.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

On 3rd down, Mayfield is sitting in the pocket, manages to escape out to his right and extend the play, finding Kareem Hunt in the corner of the end zone.

A bullet for the TD. Browns up 10-7.

The Browns are getting nothing out of the run game to this point and Hubbard cannot run block to save his life at right guard.

Hopefully Teller can get back in quickly. The Browns also need to run left or to the perimeter. So much of their run game is designed to run behind Teller, as it should, but it's all getting killed with Hubbard there.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Hubbard still in the game, the run game continues to get stuffed right through him.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield 9/13 for 132 yards after a quarter. Someone was going to insist he can beat them with his arm. They are down, but he's been more than up to the task thus far.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Browns run a keep with Mayfield and the one unblocked Colt manages to stop Mayfield short of the 1st down... 4th and 1.

They go playaction into an arrow route to Beckham, which works.

That ends the first quarter with the Browns down 7-3. Hopefully, that gives Teller enough time to come back in so they can punch this into the end zone.

The run game hasn't been effective and Mayfield and these receivers are doing the heavy lifting thus far.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

Mayfield connects with Beckham for the first time on a quick slant.

Not surprisingly, the two runs that have gone behind Hubbard have gained next to nothing, but Teller appears to be about ready to come back into the game.

Pete Smith
Pete Smith

Editor

With Beckham lining up almost exclusively on the left matched up against Xavier Rhodes, Landry is exploiting spaces in the defense and feasting this game. He's often wide open.
