Cardinals Select LSU DL Rashard Lawrence with Second Choice in NFL Draft Fourth Round

Mason Kern

With their second of two choices in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, which was originally owned by the Texans before it was traded as part of the deal that sent running back David Johnson to Houston in exchange for DeAndre Hopkins, the Arizona Cardinals selected LSU defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence No. 131 overall. The pick comes after the franchise took Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons No. 8 overall in Round 1, Houston tackle Josh Jones No. 72 in the third round on Day 2 and Utah defensive lineman Leki Fotu earlier in the fourth round today.

Lawrence joins Fotu as a two-man class of defensive linemen chosen by the Cardinals in the fourth round. Playing for the national champion Tigers last season, Lawrence became the 12th player from LSU selected in the draft this year.

The late-fourth-round pick joins Fotu in a position group that was supplemented in free agency by general manager Steve Keim and Co. as the team signed Jordan Phillips (Buffalo Bills) and Trevon Coley (Indianapolis Colts). This, along with the other defensive front-seven additions in linebackers Devon Kennard (Detroit Lions) and De'Vondre Campbell (Atlanta Falcons), along with first-round draft pick Simmons, are expected to improve a defense that was last in the NFL in 2019 in yards allowed.

The organization currently has two remaining picks on Day 3. After Fotu and Lawrence, the Cardinals' picks are in the sixth round (No. 202 overall) and seventh round (No. 222 overall). Here is a full list of the Cardinals' 2020 draft so far including their overall spot for the remainder of the event:

  • First round (8th overall): Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons
  • Third round (72nd): Houston tackle Josh Jones
  • Fourth round (114th): Utah defensive lineman Leki Fotu
  • Fourth round (131st): LSU defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence
  • Sixth round (202nd)
  • Seventh round (222nd)
