Injury Update: Derwin James Will Miss Significant Time with Stress Fracture
The Chargers will be missing perhaps the most important piece of their defense, Derwin James, after he suffered a stress fracture in his foot yesterday at practice. This is a huge blow to a team that many believe boasts the best defense in football. James is coming off a stellar rookie season and was looking to anchor one of the best secondaries in the league.
Safety has been the position battle to watch as Rayshawn Jenkins, Nasir Adderley, and Jaylen Watkins were competing for positioning on the depth chart (and perhaps the roster). This changes that position battle rather significantly. I would now expect all three to get significant playing time for the duration of James' injury.
I would expect Jenkins to play almost every snap, with Adderley and Watkins splitting time. Another thing to watch would be whether or not Jenkins moves to strong safety so that someone like Adderley can play his more natural position at free safety. That will be a question the Gus Bradley will need to answer before week one against the Colts.
This is a huge blow to this defense and there is no timetable as of now for James to return.
