Commanders Coach Chris Harris: 49ers' DeMeco Ryans Replacement?

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to replace defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. Could that new guy be Washington Commanders defensive backs coach Chris Harris?

When one door closes, another one opens.

With the Houston Texans hiring San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans on Tuesday, his position on the coaching staff in the Bay Area is now vacant ... and it may be filled by a Washington Commanders assistant.

According to CBS Sports, the 49ers are set to interview Commanders defensive backs coach Chris Harris for the role.

Former Carolina Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks is also in talks to possibly replace Ryans in San Francisco.

Harris, 40, played eight seasons in the league after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He transitioned into coaching shortly after his retirement in 2012 and has been with Washington since Ron Rivera was hired back in 2020.

Now, it could be the time for Harris to accept a promotion and enter the coordinator ranks. With established defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio blocking any type of pathway for Harris to take the position here, it might be in his best interest to look outside the organization for that bigger opportunity.

There might be several open spots on the 49ers defensive staff if Ryans poaches some of them for his crew in Houston, so that could open several doors for Harris to join one of the league's hotbeds for growth.
