Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke Entering Free Agency; What's His Price?

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke is a free agent this spring. How much money will he make on his next contract?

The Washington Commanders have a decision to make in regards to quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who is set to enter free agency next month.

Heinicke, who turns 30 next month, is due for a raise from his $1.5 million base salary he received in 2022.

ESPN projected Heinicke's range for his new contract he'll get in the offseason.

"Taylor Heinicke will probably try to get Washington to give him something similar to the two years and $14.3 million Mitch Trubisky received from Pittsburgh last season, but he'll probably have to settle for something like the one-year, $5 million deal Brissett obtained from the Browns last year," ESPN wrote.

The Commanders are likely parting ways with Carson Wentz this offseason given the fact he underperformed as a starter this season and is set to hold a cap hit just over $26 million in 2023. However, Washington still needs a veteran to keep Sam Howell company. The team likes Howell, but after just one start, the Commanders can't put all their eggs in his basket.

Bringing back Heinicke for the right price makes sense because he knows the team's system, has experience winning and is a positive presence in the locker room.

The Commanders may want to add a veteran quarterback with more upside like Jimmy Garoppolo or Derek Carr, but if the team wants to lean towards giving Howell more of an opportunity, Heinicke would be the perfect fit since he can start or come off the bench.

The question now becomes whether or not the Commanders will decide to pay up.
