'Getcha Popcorn Ready': Bragging Rights at Stake as Eagles at Cowboys Kicks Off; My Prediction

Mike Fisher

ARLINGTON - Yes, this is a "getcha popcorn ready'' moment. The Dallas Cowboys generally say they do not care less about coach Doug Pederson’s “guarantee” that the Philadelphia Eagles will win today. Dallas defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence fires back by telling Pederson to "shut his ass up.''

Fingers won't wag at the start of this bulletin-board-material matchup. But when one of these 3-3 teams survive at night's end here at AT&T Stadium? Fingers will wag. And so will tongues.

“Tell him to come on,” Tank said Friday from the locker room at The Star. “We’re ready. Can he play the game? He might want to shut his ass up and stay on the sidelines. He can’t play the game for them… We’ll see.”

Both the Cowboys and Eagles should be fired up for this divisional showdown on national TV. There is, among the storylines, Dallas' fight back to decent-enough health ...

And ... There is a healthy dislike here, additionally fueled by Pederson's bold prediction - and then his wimpy retraction.

“We’re going down to Dallas and our guys are going to be ready to play,” Pederson said early in the week on Philadephia radio station WIP. “And we’re going to win that football game, and when we do, we’re in first place in the NFC East.”

Is that a "guarantee''? No, whined Pederson later that day, trying to retract his statement by proclaiming he never used the word “guarantee.”

But the comments from Pederson and the retaliatory comments from Lawrence hang in the night air here in Arlington. ... and kickoff is coming.

And my prediction: Dallas 24, Philadelphia 22.
