Dak Deal: Garrett Reveals Thoughts On Cowboys QB Contract

Former Cowboys boss Jason Garrett told the 'Great Dane Podcast' that Prescott is a 'fantastic player' and a 'fantastic person' in discussing Dak's new deal

Dak Prescott isn’t the only one happy he got paid. His former head coach, Jason Garrett, is "glad" to see his former player locked up long-term, even though his New York Giants have to face Prescott and the Cowboys twice in 2021.

Garrett, now the offensive coordinator with the New York Giants, spoke to former NFL kicker Morten Andersen on Andersen’s ‘Great Dane Nation Podcast,’ part of the VegasInsider.com network. The former Cowboys head coach talked about a wide range of topics, but Prescott’s name came up, as Andersen was interested to get Garrett’s take on Prescott’s new long-term deal.

Garrett told Andersen he was “glad that happened.”

“We talked about the special people and the special players we've had opportunities to be around, and he's (Prescott) just absolutely one of them,” Garrett said. “We drafted him in the middle of the fourth round in 2016 and Tony Romo gets hurt and Dak comes in as a rookie and wins 13 games for us.

"The success that he's had leading that organization ... he's a fantastic player who's going to get better and better and better. He’s a fantastic leader and a fantastic person to have in that position.''

The Cowboys and Prescott recently agreed to a contract that will pay him a record-breaking $75 million in 2021, with $126 million in guaranteed money as part of a four-year, $160 million deal. He is also coming off a leg injury that kept him out for the final 11 games of the 2020 season.

Before his gruesome leg injury last season, Prescott was on a statistical pace that would have put him in the NFL’s most valuable player conversation, had he been able to sustain it. In five games last season, Prescott threw for 1,856 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions, while completing a career-high 68 percent of his passes.

Prescott’s career now includes 17,634 passing yards, 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions. Before his injury last season, he had led the Cowboys to four straight seasons of a .500 or better record, two NFC East titles and a 1-2 playoff record.

"(I’m) really excited for him,'' Garrett said. "Really excited for the Cowboys and for the NFL. I'm glad that (contract) happened.”
