Former Eagles QB Carson Wentz: 'Best Option' for Raiders?

Could the Las Vegas Raiders look to sign former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz?

If the Las Vegas Raiders opt to move on from veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo before the 2023 season, they may need to expand their search beyond their current roster.

And a potential candidate who could step in and fill Garoppolo's shoes? Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who ESPN thinks would be the "best option" for a team with an odd signal-caller situation.

"If the Raiders have to look elsewhere, free agent Carson Wentz would seem to be the best option," ESPN wrote on Thursday. "Raiders pass game coordinator Scott Turner has experience with Wentz as the Washington Commanders' offensive coordinator last season, for what it's worth."

During Garoppolo's initial physical examination with the Raiders, it was discovered that his foot injury from last year required surgical intervention. As a result, Las Vegas included an addendum in his contract worth $72.8 million over three years, allowing the team to part ways without any financial implications if the foot injury hampers his ability to play.

Wentz, having been released by the Washington Commanders in February, is currently a free agent. His lone season with the team proved to be challenging, as he started in seven games and ended with a disappointing record of 2-5. Throughout the season, Wentz amassed 1,755 passing yards, along with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

However, he could provide an upgrade compared to the current options behind Garoppolo on the Las Vegas depth chart. The alternatives consist of Brian Hoyer, Chase Garbers, and fourth-round draft pick Aidan O'Connell.

The Raiders' decision to sign Garoppolo was a well-considered gamble, given the contract provisions that provided them with the option to terminate it swiftly. Nevertheless, their potential oversight stems from their failure to adequately secure an appropriate backup plan.
