WATCH: Could Grady Jarrett and Atlanta Falcons be headed for contract standoff?
The Atlanta Falcons and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett have yet to come to an agreement on a contract extension. According to multiple reports, the two sides aren't even close to a new deal.
But Jarrett won't be leaving Atlanta anytime soon. The Falcons placed the franchise tag on the defensive tackle Monday, which he won't become a free agent this month. The two sides will now have until July 15 to agree to an extension.
“As we have said since the end of the season, getting a deal done with Grady is our priority,” Falcons general manager Dimitroff said according to atlantafalcons.com. “Applying the franchise tag to him does not change that in any way. Our aim is for Grady to be an integral part of our plan for many years to come and this allows us to extend our negotiating window.”
At the same time, though, the 2019 season is an extremely important year for the organization. If the Falcons finish outside the playoff picture again, major changes could come to the organization.
Even if it's the team's intent to sign Jarrett to an extension, it seems unlikely the team would do so in a way that will jeopardize its ability to add more pieces to the team this offseason. If having Jarrett play on the franchise tag benefits the team, don't be surprised if that's what the Falcons' new plan becomes.
