WATCH: Jets CB Alex Brown solidifies case for roster spot vs. Saints

Following an eye-opening performance against the Saints, well-traveled rookie cornerback Alex Brown suddenly finds himself on the roster bubble.

Alex Brown's four month NFL journey has already included two trips to the waiver wire and racking up frequent flyer miles. A collegiate standout, he was now being told he wasn't good enough for the next level.

Despite a productive five-year career at South Carolina State, Brown was without a team when the 2019 NFL Draft came to a close. While the result was disappointing for the 22-year-old, it wasn't a conclusion -- just another opportunity to prove he belonged.

A rookie minicamp invite of the San Francisco 49ers, Brown did enough to impress, parlaying his tryout into a spot on their 90-man training camp roster. Though the spring standout flashed in his limited reps, he became an early camp casualty on July 25.

Brown wouldn't have to wait long to find work, however -- but he'd have to travel across the country.

In an attempt to bolster a secondary ravaged by injury, the Philadelphia Eagles claimed the 5-foot-10, 170-pound cornerback off waivers the following day. Competing with talented risers Sidney Jones, Avonte Maddox, Rasul Douglas and a slew of others, Brown's practice reps were scarce.

When the Eagles learned they would be without linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill for an extended period of time, they opted to add another body at the position -- with Brown again becoming the casualty. The rookie still managed to squeeze in a few noteworthy plays before ultimately moving onto his next destination.

While Brown was again forced to pack his bags and contemplate his next move, former Eagles Vice President of Player Personnel and current Jets GM Joe Douglas was all over the move. The New York Jets claimed the cornerback off waivers the following day.

A short trip up the New Jersey Turnpike this time, Brown couldn't have landed in a more ideal situation. With the team short handed on the backend, Brown was immediately thrown into the cornerback mix.

What the diminutive cornerback lacks in NFL experience, he more than makes up for with his grit, football intelligence and ball skills. Against the New Orleans Saints, Brown officially announced his arrival to Jets Nation.

Coming on in early relief of fellow cornerback Tevaughn Campbell, Brown recorded five tackles and two pass breakups, leading the entire defense in snaps. His tremendous eye discipline allowed him to trust his technique and make plays on the football, and combined with his elite athleticism, looked like the best cornerback on the field at times.

He'll need another strong showing for a chance at making the 53-man roster, but his extended look on Saturday has now put him in the conversation. When the Jets take the field against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, Brown will have a chance to rewrite his story, proving he's right where he belongs.
