GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers have a hole at receiver that Romeo Doubs is ready to grab.

A fourth-round draft pick, Doubs scored two touchdowns at Thursday’s training camp practice. When camp breaks in about a month, the first of his touchdowns will go down as one of the great plays of the summer.

During a red-zone drill – one generally won by the defense – Doubs lined up to the right side of the formation against starting cornerback Eric Stokes. Aaron Rodgers threw the ball right between the “2” and the “1” on Stokes’ jersey. Doubs leaped and reached over the top of Stokes for a fantastic catch and the touchdown.

Doubs broke down the play during a three-part question following practice.

First, what did he see pre-snap?

“I knew it was a man look because he had heavy eye on me. Just wanted to attack leverage and Aaron threw a great ball and I was able to make a great grab and go onto the next play.”

Second, with maybe a half-step on Stokes but a lack of space in the end zone, did he consider himself open?

“Yes, because I had just enough space from the sideline to make sure I can get the ball and get my feet inbounds. Pre-snap, I had a feeling the ball was coming to me just based on spacing.”

Third, what was he thinking when the ball was thrown? This is where the rookie showed some veteran savvy.

“Stokes’ back was turned. I’ve noticed watching film that the majority of some of the QBs’ throws, receivers gets chances based on the DB’s POV (point of view). His back was turned. From that point, he doesn’t know where the ball’s going to, if it’s going to go over him, under him. His back was turned, Aaron gave me a chance and I was able to make something happen.”

A four-year star at Nevada, Doubs was one of the most productive receivers in the class. He finished his career with 224 receptions for 3,322 yards (14.8 average) and 26 touchdowns. He had 40-plus receptions in every season and 1,000-plus yards as a junior and senior. In 2021, he grabbed 80 passes for 1,109 yards (13.9 average) and 11 touchdowns.

So far, the jump in competition from the Mountain West Conference to the NFL has been anything but insurmountable. If he’s been surprised at his early success, you’d hardly know it. The touchdown was celebrated with handshakes with Rodgers and the rest of the offense.

“I’ve been doing it since high school. Everybody knows that I'm not this big,” Doubs said before switching gears a bit, “and I understand that celebrating is important. I just make sure I try to focus on the next play. That's my biggest thing for me. You can have a great play, next play could be bad. Emotions change, so that's why I try to make sure I stay flat-lined.”

At 6-foot-1 3/4, 4.53 speed in the 40 and with massive 10 1/4-inch, he’s got tools to go with his savvy. It’s early – incredibly early, with just two practices in the books and two days of joint practices against the Jets and three preseason games on the horizon. As coach Matt LaFleur said of Doubs before practice, “Anybody can do something one day.” Nonetheless, Doubs has taken advantage of his opportunities with veteran Sammy Watson and fellow rookie Christian Watson out with injuries.

“I thought today was just another great day of practice,” Doubs, who capped practice with a touchdown against linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, said. “Just being myself, I make sure that I try to be as humble as I possibly can. Just stay consistent, just focus on the little things.”
