A Rainy Practice Before the Preseason Opener

Random Notes in a Rain Storm

The Patriots practiced in a strong downpour Wednesday. Tom Brady largely took the second half of practice off and it is unclear whether he will play Thursday night in the Pats preseason opener against the Washington Redskins. Also absent from practice were RB Sony Michel and OL Marcus Cannon. Kenny Britt, Trey Flowers, Matthew Slater, Nate Ebner all spent at least some time on the lower field where players rehab.

Had the chance to speak with DL Deatrich Wise, who is in his second year out of Arkansas, after practice. Some fun facts about Deatrich Wise Jr. He wears a size 18 shoe - four sizes bigger than your humble correspondent. He is from Carrollton, Texas - which is near Dallas, Texas. The only time Wise misses home is during the winter months when it is snowing outside. Wise said the most fun he has playing football is when the team wins and he gets to sack the QB. Wise is excited about Thursday because he is tired of hiting players on his own team. The Pats did not have joint practices with another team for the first time since 2011. Wise might be the most happy player on the Patriots. At 6 foot 5, 270 pounds, he is a gentle giant with a huge smile even in the dog days of training camp. He has a zest for life and loves to play big brother with the rookies and tell them when they are doing something wrong. He eats lots of fruits, vegetables and protein - but pressed on if he has a favorite food - Wise said he just eats a lot this time of the year. Wise also said college was the first time he thought about the tactical side of football. In high school, he didn't listen to the call in the huddle and just went after the QB.

S Patrick Chung had the best response to the new helmet rule. The officials presented the rules changes to the media Wednesday afternoon at Gillette Stadium and admitted that they will call more penalties to enforce the no leading with your helmet rule. Chung said he will just keep playing football because football is a dirty game and there is not much one can do. Don't expect Chung to stay up late watching video about the rules changes.

RB Jeremy Hill who signed with the Pats in the offseason did not believe when former Pats RB Stevan Ridley told him that despite what you read Tom Brady behaves like just one of the guys in the locker room. Hill admits with a laugh that Ridley is correct.

Devin McCourty on his visit to the Apple Store in Dedham, Mass to repair his Apple Watch last month. "Look everyone needs help with their electronics every now and then." McCourty is a true gentleman.

Former Washington Redskins QB Joe Theismann was at Pats practice Wednesday.
