Patriots Notebook after 38-24 Blowout Win
Defense Still A Concern
Playing against a Colts offense that was missing starting running back Marlon Mack, WR T.Y Hilton, TE Jack Doyle, and LT Anthony Castonzo - the Pats defense still gave up 365 yards yard through the air and 449 yards overall. The Pats struggled to cover Eric Ebron who had 9 catches for 105 yards, Chester Rogers who had 8 catches for 66 yards, and don't forget about the immortal Erik Swoope who the Colts activated from the practice squad Wednesday. Swoope finished three catches for 44 yards. He had one touchdown and another was called back because he was down at the half yard line. Without CB Eric Rowe who has struggled tremendously this season, Jason McCourty has been serviceable in his place. Jonathan Jones has been inconsistent.
The only positive was the secondary made some plays. Jones had an interception, Patrick Chung had an interception, and Devin McCourty caused a fumble. The pass rush was limited and the coverage was mediocre. It didn't help that Malcom Brown (knee) left in the second quarter. The Pats are still trying to find combinations that work up front. It would be nice if DE Adrian Clayborn - a foreign country heard from applied some pressure. The Pats had one sack - it was combination sack from Patrick Chung and Trey Flowers in the first half.
Vinatieri, 45, is a true legend of the game. Vinatieri missed his first field goal of 38 yards as it hit off the left upright. Vinatieri was determined, though and he hit a 54-yard field goal in the second quarter. Brady earned his 226th win Thursday Night all-time to tie Adam Vinatieri for most all-time. Vinatieri surpassed Gary Anderson for second most field attempts Thursday Night.
"There's a lot of people who have meant a lot to this organization, but certainly nobody more than Tom Brady. Adam – the time he was here was fabulous. He made some of the biggest kicks in the history of the game. Certainly one of the toughest, but he made a lot of them. We wouldn’t' have won a lot of the games that we won without great players like that or some of the other guys that have been out here the last couple of weeks. [Matt] Light, [Willie] McGinest, Ty Law, so forth. We've had a lot of the great players back here the last couple of weeks so it's great to see that. But yeah, Vinatieri, I can't imagine a kicker more deserving of whatever the highest accolade you could get than him and the same is true for Tom. His records are incredible. With that I'd just like to wish the Red Sox well in their playoff series. We're pulling for them," Bill Belichick said.
Pats inactives CB Eric Rowe, CB Cyrus Jones, DL Keionta Davis, DL Geneo Grissom, DL Derek Rivers, OL Cole Croston, OL Ted Karras....Pats fans started chanting Yankees Suck in the second half... Willie McGinest, A Football Life, premieres Friday Night on NFL Network. McGinest was at Gillette Thursday Night. Defensively, the Colts were a walking infirmary without many of their best players
