Patriots Notebook after Blowout 38-7 Win
Foxboro Mass --
Dolphins Should Be Upset
Miami had the chance to take a three game lead against the Pats in the AFC East. Instead, many Pats fans probably left Gillette Stadium thinking the Pats would clinch the AFC East before the end of November. Miami was terrible in every area and Coach Adam Gase said afterwards that he did not anticipate his team being out played physically the way it was.
"It is what it is. They beat us. They beat us in every phase of the game. They out-physicaled (not a word - NFL coaches are not known for their grammar) us, but at the same time we have to put things into perspective, one game. We have to go back to work. We have to find a way to win another road game on the road," Gase said.
The Dolphins placed the blame more on themselves than what the Pats did well.
"Poor execution and pretty similar to last year when we were here. It is a poor excuse," LB Kiko Alonso said.
Josh Gordon Speaks at Last
Josh Gordon who has been with the Pats for about two weeks finally spoke to the media for the first time. He had two catches for 32 yards Sunday. Gordon loved when he caught a 19-yard pass from Tom Brady and Brady celebrated with him.
"I mean, it's awesome, just period, catching a pass from Tom at any point in time. He's been rooting for me, and it's been awesome to have his support and his love, as well as the rest of the teammates and staff here. You know, Tom's a passionate guy and I love that, and I love the game of football and I think we're going to mesh just fine," said Gordon who was only allowed to answer three questions.
Gordon, who was suspended in all of 2015 and 2016 because of substance abuse issues and has not played even close to a full season since 2013, is determined to take advantage of this opportunity.
"I have no doubt I'm going to take advantage of this opportunity. I'm more than blessed. I'm extremely grateful to be put in this scenario. I think the only thing right for me to do is to take full advantage of it. I'm loving it, I'm enjoying, the guy's here are great, it's a real home environment and I feel as comfortable as ever here. It's awesome," Gordon said.
Pats Defense Improves
Pats defense only gave up seven points Sunday in mop-up time after giving up 57 points combined the past two weeks. Deatrich Wise told Pats Maven after the game that it's better execution, every player doing their job and playing from ahead that was the difference. An offense becomes more predictable when it is playing from behind as the Dolphins needed to abandon their running game early Sunday. From this vantage point, the biggest improvement on the defense was the coverage. Dolphins leading receiver Kenny Stills had only three catches for 40 yards.
Rob Gronkowski, who had four catches for 44 yards and passed Ben Coates as the Pats all-time leading pass catcher at tight end with 491 catches, left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury. It might have been precautionary as the Pats led 31-0 at the time. DL Adam Butler and LB Elandon Roberts left the game in the fourth quarter with injuries.
Julian Edelman returns this week from suspension. Cordarrelle Patterson emerged from hibernation with a 55-yard touchdown catch. Phillip Dorsett had four catches for 55 yards including a nice 20-yard touchdown catch. Bill Belichick became the third coach in NFL history with 280 wins. George Halas has 324 wins and Don Shula has 347 wins. Pats next game is at Gillette Stadium Thursday Night October 4 against the Indianapolis Colts.
