Incumbent Chad Pennington was thought to be the unquestioned starter heading into 2009, but a recent Miami Herald story shed some doubt it was a foregone conclusion. "We need to get Chad Henne ready to play," a source told the paper. "... We do need to give Henne a chance to get ready because his time is coming."

Kellen Clemens is entering his fourth season in the Jets system, and Brett Ratliff showed promise with a 122.5 passer rating in the preseason last year. Erik Ainge will also get a look as the Jets look for Brett Favre's replacement.

Shaun Hill is 7-3 as a starter over the past two seasons, but coach Mike Singletary hasn't annointed him the man just yet. Alex Smith's struggles have been well-documented, but he recently restructured his contract and will enter training camp without any pressure for the first time as a pro.

Though given ample opportunity, Tarvaris Jackson hasn't grabbed the starting job the way the Vikings would have liked. So they signed former Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels and will have an open competition between the two in training camp.

Daunte Culpepper is the incumbent here, and unproven Drew Stanton will also get a look. The wild card, obviously, is the Lions' No. 1 pick in April's draft. Georgia's Matt Stafford is a possibility there; the Lions will know more after a private workout on March 31.
