Can Taysom Hill be the Starting QB for the Saints? (POLL)

Kyle T. Mosley

After a couple of weeks of drama and speculation, the Taysom Hill saga is resounding.  The question many in the media have asked focuses on Hill's future potential in the NFL.  Can Taysom Hill be the successor for Drew Brees in New Orleans this season or next season?

We want to know your thoughts on Taysom Hill.  Can he successfully take over as the New Orleans Saints first-string quarterback this season or next season in the Big Easy?

Hill is more than just a quarterback since arriving in New Orleans.  The third-year pro has been a 'spark-plug' and 'play-maker' for the Saints.  Hill desires the opportunity to lead a franchise.  Will the Saints tender the restricted free-agent quarterback as a 1st or 2nd round pick?  Most of all, will they match any team's offer for Hill's services in 2020?

Saints Fans, let us hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

I just wondered if Bridewater had stunk up the joint like Taysom has would you fans forgive him? Most of you don't want TB because he's black and if TB was like TH run all over the place you wouldn't give him the time of day. Racism yeah on you part you just to coward to say it. You need to stop lying to yourselves thinking TH is better than TB. TB was a #1 pick ... TH wasn't even invited to the NFL combine, there is a reason for that. TH had use of the saints playbook longer than TB and he could not beat him out. 2017 TH was out classed by Josh Rosen when he started with the Saints first team in preseason ... and some of you were saying the same thing give him a chance lets see how he looks and he turned the ball over 4 times. I remember one turnover no one touched him he just fumbled.

This is why the saints had to go and get a real QB. Even when Brees had to tend to some personal business during training camp it was TB who took the snap and the media and fans were raving about. That 5-0 record was not a fluke it showed balance and most important a rested defense. When Brees returned the team got away from balance and turned pass happy which left the D on the field too often.

They had game when they barely won vs bad teams and lost when they had a lead because of excessive passing. This is the same trait that caused the Saints to go 7-9 and if the Saints continue to be unbalanced they will return to the 3 seasons of 7-9.

Absolutely! Taysom Hill Can and will be a franchise quarterback. By the way Taysom Hill isn't a jack-of-all-trades, He is a master of all trades. When he takes all the focus and energy that he has to exert on all the positions that he plays and puts into under center, and plus his will to win along with being filled with joy at the same time he will quickly be the master QB! The tagline for Taysom will be " Unstoppable"

One more year under Bree watch... Taysom Hill takes 2021 MVP home... Lamar won the 2019 MVP coz of running yards not by throwing... Taysom is more faster and stronger than Lamar J.... Taysom was in Heisman trophy conversation in college before he got hurt...

Brees is back, Teddy is a long shot to be back and Taysom up in the air. So lets go with the majority wisdom here and say it's Brees and Taysom.

Taysom starts the Preseason games with mostly 1st team and maybe even the third quarter to both integrate, teach and evaluate him.

Drew is our starter and Taysom gets used as before but leaning more and more to QB. If he falters or the shine fades we find out early and plot plan B. If he meets the high expectations of the team he continues as the heir apparent working toward a transition to our starter. By mid season we should know if Taysom is the man or just a broken promise.

Plan B may be a draft pick like Utah's Love or a free agent.

It is a relatively low risk, sky's the limit experiment.

With Hill as their QB, the Saints can continue to look for, or develop, their post-Brees post-Taysom franchise QB, while still remaining competitive and entertaining.

Here's something to consider. By making Taysom their starter in 2021, the Saints create an opportunity to acquire other key impact players to make a serious playoff run. (The model for this is the 2015 Denver Broncos SB team, with a dominant defense, and an average offense and QB.) Consider that Taysom would be making an estimated ~$8M per year average (for an unproven full time QB), on maybe a 3-year contract, with a portion of it guaranteed. Subtract that number from the average salary of the 16 (i.e. the top half) highest paid QBs in 2019 (source: overthecap),) which is $26.5M, and that leaves the Saints $18M to pay other players. Granted, the Saints will have to continue paying off Brees' remaining salary, but the point is, by committing to an affordable Taysom Hill as their starting QB in 2021, the Saints can cure a lot of their financial woes, and still remain competitive. And maybe even make a nice playoff run or two. At least in theory.

As a drop-back pocket passer, Hill may be average, but who really knows? Payton has seen him throw hundreds of passes in practice and his passes in games have been in unusual formations. He is big, fast and strong (how many quarterbacks squat 625 lbs?) and very intelligent (how many players can learn and execute plays in five different offensive positions?) and clearly a locker-room player's player. I think Hill should understudy Brees in a significant way for a year and then take over QB duties full-time.

Bridgewater was picked over Hill by Saints management because of the big bucks being paid to him. Teddy will likely be gone and it is time for Taysom.

I doubt Hill goes 5-0 while Drew was hurt last year. I could be wrong, my thought at time of Drew's injury, Can Teddy win us at least 3 of the projected 6 games!!!!!!

Team management you forgot the 4 turnovers TH had vs the Cardinals. The same game when JT Barrett was the only QB who scored and oh TH started the first half of that game. TB chose the Saints over the Dolphins in his second season with the Saints, not the other way around. He didn't want to be in the same situation he was in with the Jets competing for a starting job when its in their future to be drafting their future QB. It was best to be a backup behind Brees at least he knew his status with the Saints.

@BLBOregon Those are solid points to consider. He would have to "tame his game" if he would become a starter.

We have never seen a defense prepare for Taysom and only Taysom.
Only a chance would show if he can do it, but most QBs with his skill set go out with injuries. He doesn’t protect himself as a runner. He doesn’t throw receivers open. Payton would not let his franchise QB do a lot of the things Taysom does. He wouldn’t even let Taysom do it as QB2.

I think Teddy was the right QB to step into a Brees offense on a temporary basis. That doesn't mean the organization views him as the better QB overall. With Taysom's time and focus on other roles, he cannot even be a QB2. People often don't get that. A QB2 spends ALL his time on the QB position so he is ready to step in on a moment's notice. Taysom will only spend significant time on the field if he is a QB3 or QB1. And Taysom NEEDS to be on the field.

@Saintsation do you think with more 1st team reps during the offseason, if he stays, Teddy could be a good #1 QB?

OH HELL YAAAAS, Taysom Hill has all the tools needed, a great brain, great arm, makes quick smart decisions, great legs, fast. The most Dynamic versatile BaddAss player on the field.

Teddy Bridgewater is not ready yet.Field goals won part of the games. The defense and offence strieved harder for Teddy than what they done for Brees. Teddy is still in his own way afraid of getting hurt and did not throw the ball enough.Tayson may need to practice on staying in the pocket more.Maybe next year for Tayson because he is a go getter around the field.Maybe next year for Tayson Hill.

As long as Teddy Bridgewater is still there Hill has no chance to be the starter!

@Dr.C if Taysom was better than Teddy this past year, he would have been the #2. The Saints staff know that he is not as consistent of a passer.

I really like Taysom Hill with the Saints, but the jury is still out as it relates to his leadership at the helm and leading the team to victories. I'm more comfortable with Teddy Bridgewater.
