Seattle Seahawks NFL Draft Live Blog Day 2

In a stunning turn of events, Seattle not only made a pick in the first round without trading down, but they selected an inside linebacker in Jordyn Brooks. What will John Schneider and Pete Carroll look to accomplish in the second and third round?

After months of anticipation, the 2020 NFL Draft has finally arrived.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the league has been forced to resort to a virtual draft format with coaches, executives, scouts, and even commissioner Roger Goodell working remotely from home. While it's inconvenienced those involved in the process, the event should still be a thrilling one for fans as a new wave of talent enters the NFL starting on Thursday night.

Owning seven total picks in this year's draft, including six in the first four rounds, the Seahawks surprised by using their original first round pick at No. 27 overall on Texas Tech linebacker Jordyn Brooks.

Seattle originally was scheduled to make eight selections, but Schneider dealt a fifth round pick to Washington in exchange for cornerback Quinton Dunbar in March. Three of their selections are compensatory ones after losing safety Earl Thomas, cornerback Justin Coleman, and defensive tackle Shamar Stephen in free agency last year.

Here's a list of the Seahawks 2020 picks, including their overall spot:

  • Round 1, Pick 27 - Jordyn Brooks, LB, Texas Tech
  • Round 2, Pick 48** - Darrell Taylor, DE, Tennessee
  • Round 2, Pick 69*** -
  • Round 4, Pick 133
  • Round 4, Pick 144*
  • Round 5, Pick 148***

4:13 PM: Adding another weapon for new quarterback Joe Burrow, the Bengals used their second selection at pick No. 33 on Clemson receiver Tee Higgins. Known for his route running prowess and ability to high point the football, he will be an excellent complement to A.J. Green and John Ross. Grade: B+

4:19 PM: With Philip Rivers now under center for the short term, the Colts are building around him with a new weapon. Continuing the run on receivers, 6-foot-4 receiver Michael Pittman out of USC will form a dangerous tandem with T.Y. Hilton and Parris Campbell. Grade: A-

4:22 PM: There will surely be a run on running backs on day two and the party got started with the Lions drafting Georgia runner D'Andre Swift. An elusive back with soft hands out of the backfield, he will be a solid complement for Kerryon Johnson. Grade: B-

4:26 PM: Defensive linemen continue to slip down the board, which may be an interesting development for Seattle. At pick 36, the Giants upgraded their secondary with a versatile safety in Alabama's Xavier McKinney, who can also play slot corner and money linebacker near the box. Grade: B+

4:34 PM: As the first small school prospect to fly off the board, the Patriots took uber-athletic, versatile defensive back Kyle Dugger out of Lenoir Rhyne. After an impressive Senior Bowl showing, Bill Belichick adds more talent to a strong back half of his defense. Grade: B

4:36 PM: After slipping out of the first round, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos finally heard his name called, joining the Panthers with the No. 38 overall pick. New coach Matt Rhule should be fired up to team him up with Derrick Brown, the team's first round pick. Grade: A-

4:39 PM: Picks continue to trickle in and one of Seattle's favorite offensive line prospects has been snagged with the Dolphins drafting Louisiana-Lafayette mauler Robert Hunt. He will likely play guard in Miami, adding a strong run blocker to the team's front line. Grade: B

4:40 PM: Another player who the Seahawks had interest in officially is off the board, as the Texans reinforce their defensive line with TCU defensive tackle Ross Blacklock. He should jump right into the lineup with J.J. Watt and company. Grade: B+

4:47 PM: Moving up to get their bell cow running back, the Colts traded up with the Browns to pick No. 41 and snagged Jonathan Taylor out of Wisconsin. He'll have a chance to put up huge numbers behind one of the NFL's best lines. Grade: A

4:52 PM: Despite putting up excellent numbers for the Colorado Buffaloes, injury concerns caused receiver Laviska Shenault to drop to pick No. 42 before the Jaguars ended his fall. A phenomenal athlete with special teams value, he could be a second round steal catching passes from Gardner Minshew. Grade: B+

4:55 PM: The first tight end off the board, Notre Dame's Cole Kmet is staying close to South Bend, landing with the Bears at pick No. 43. Possessing intriguing athletic tools at 6-foot-6 and a capable blocker, he's an intriguing prospect, but the Bears have nine tight ends already on the roster. Grade: C+

5:06 PM: Bolstering their secondary, safety Grant Delpit is heading to the Browns, joining his former LSU teammate Greedy Williams off the shores of Lake Erie. Missed tackles are problematic, but he's a versatile play maker. Grade: B-

5:20 PM: Bucking previous trends, Seattle traded up with the New York Jets to get a quality pass rusher, using the No. 48 overall pick on Tennessee defensive end Darrell Taylor. Taylor produced 16.5 sacks over the past two years playing in the SEC and should be able to chase down quarterbacks immediately. Grade: B

6:30 PM: Recouping one of the picks lost in an earlier trade to acquire Taylor, the Seahawks trade down from pick No. 64 to No. 69, adding an additional fifth round pick (No. 148) from the Panthers.
