Report: Seahawks Interested in Mississippi State DT Jeffery Simmons

Despite being in the midst of a lengthy recovery from a torn ACL suffered in February, the Seahawks appear to have interest in Mississippi State star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons.

According to Seahawk Maven contributor Rob Rang, Simmons has met with or intends to visit the Seahawks in the near future. Rang also reported the Browns, Eagles, Jaguars, and Colts as other teams who have already met with the former Bulldogs standout or plan to do so before the draft.

After the five-star recruit signed his letter of intent to play at Mississippi State, Simmons racked up 163 combined tackles, 33 tackles for loss, and 7.0 sacks in three seasons. The dominant 6-foot-4, 301-pound defender also filled up the stat sheet in a myriad of other ways, finishing his career with five forced fumbles and seven pass deflections.

After recording a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss in an Outback Bowl defeat at the hands of Iowa on New Year’s Day, Simmons decided to forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the 2019 NFL Draft and looked like a surefire top-10 pick in a class loaded with defensive line talent.

But while partaking in an ordinary drill during an offseason workout in preparation for the NFL Scouting Combine, Simmons tore his left ACL on February 12 and recently underwent successful surgery to repair the injury.

Players typically need at least nine months to fully recover, which would put Simmons on target to return in October at the earliest. As indicated by Rang, there’s a chance he may not be able to play at all next season and will need a “redshirt” season before returning to the field in 2020.

But as long as teams are satisfied with his progress and receive a sufficient explanation for his involvement in a domestic violence dispute prior to his arrival at Mississippi State, Simmons still has a great chance to hear his name called in the second round due to his impressive talent when healthy.

Drafting an injured player doesn't seem intelligent to me.
