Steelers Working On Alex Highsmith Extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers are trying to get a deal done with Alex Highsmith.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently working on a contract extension with outside linebacker Alex Highsmith, but where they are in the process remains unknown.

During the first day of Organized Team Activities, Highsmith confirmed with reporters that his agent has begun talking with the Steelers about a new deal, but will also continue to work until something gets done.

"I'm someone who likes to be here and likes to work," Highsmith said.

The fourth-year linebacker is the biggest veteran at OTAs with T.J. Watt absent to start the week. Pittsburgh is operating with Highsmith, Quincy Roche and rookie Nick Herbig at outside linebacker.

"Coming in as a rookie is tough. It's a whole new lifestyle, got study the playbook and be in meetings," Highsmith said. "... So just being there to just help him with what they need."

Highsmith said he's "optimistic" about getting a deal done this summer. As for when he might sign, the Steelers typically try to get contracts done before training camp. However, Diontae Johnson did not sign until into camp last summer.
