Talk of Fame Network gives Denzel Washington his Oscar

Denzel Washington starred in the movie “Fences” and also directed it. But he did not win an Oscar for his acting, nor did “Fences” win an Oscar for Best Picture.

So we’re going to give Washington his Oscar now.

In our Talk of Fame Network poll last week, we asked our listeners and readers to vote on the greatest football movie of all time. Remember the Titans, starring Washington as coach Herman Boone, won with 30 percent of the vote, topping Friday Night Lights at 24 percent. Rudy (14 percent) and Brian’s Song (12 percent) were the only other football movies to finish with double-digit support in the poll.

North Dallas Forty, The Blind Side, Everybody’s All-American, Heaven Can Wait and Horsefeathers all finished in single digits. There was also Twitter support for The Longest Yard, We Are Marshall, Invincible, Varsity Blues and The Program.

Talk of Fame Network hosts Ron Borges, Clark Judge and Rick Gosselin split their votes with all selecting a different movie.

“I Remember the Titans,” Borges said, “but nothing can turn out the lights on Friday Night Lights. That was a classic.”

Judge also cast his ballot for one of the also-rans.

Everybody's All-American was well acted and a terrific story,” Judge said. “Plus, there's Jessica Lange. Touched all the bases. One of the most underrated sports movies ever.”

Only Gosselin voted for Remember the Titans, a movie about an African-American who became head football coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va. He coached a team that become racially integrated for the first time that school year, and the film explored how he dealt with the pressure cooker that was his first season. Based on a true story, the movie chronicles the friendships forged in a championship season.

“Any movie that can tie Gettsyburg to football has to be a great flick,” Gosselin said.
