Why Dutch Clark heads this historian's list of pre-World War II running backs
NFL historian Chris Willis of Pro Football Journal is at it again.
This time the head of the Research Library at NFL Films breaks down his best halfbacks from the pre-World War II era, and his list comes with a surprise: It doesn’t begin with Red Grange. In fact, Grange isn’t in Willis’ Top Five.
But it does begin with someone that Willis respects so much that, as Willis put it, starting his roll call with him was “not even a tough choice.” Does the name Dutch Clark sound familiar? It should because he was one of the 17 members of the Hall’s 1963 charter class.
