J.J. Watt Puts 100% of the Texans Loss to the Saints on the Defense

Patrick D. Starr

J.J. Watt has appeared in 105 games during his decorated NFL career, and he has never left a game without a tackle or quarterback hit. Tonight against the New Orleans Saints, Watt did not register a single stat in a disappointing start to the season.

With the quick trigger of Saints quarterback Drew Brees and different combinations of blockers thrown at Watt. The Saints slowed Watt's pass rush making him a non-factor majority of the game.

Watt was disappointed with his performance to open the season.

"I'm used to that," Watt said of teams double to triple-teaming him. "I have been dealing with a lot of my career, and tonight was no different for sure. It's very frustrating, but that's something you deal with when you're in the position that I'm in. So, you got to find a way to get there, and tonight, I didn't. I take that on me, and I'm going to find a way to get there. We'll find a way to to make some things happen. It's certainly tough, but we'll figure it out."

Watt was more disappointed in how the Texans defense responded in the second half of the game after only giving up three points in the first half. Surrendering 27 second-half points to the Saints, the Texans defense looked lost at times in coverage and no consistent pass rush.

"There's a lot of things that are on us," Watt explained. "I mean, hold them to three points in the first half, and then give up 27 in the second. It's terrible."

The Texans defense gave up seven plays over 20 yards and four plays over 40-yards. Add in an inconsistent pass rush and allowing five of six drives to produce scores in the second half. It was a disappointing finish to a promising start for the defense.

"So, for our offense to give us the lead, and with whatever was 40 seconds left, and to not win that game," Watt continued. "I mean, that's bad football by us on defense and so we will take 100% of that blame as we should."
