Houston Texans Sign Quarterback Jordan Ta'amu Due to Injury to A.J. McCarron

The Houston Texans have signed free-agent quarterback Jordan Ta'amu to help the quarterback room for the remainder of training camp and the preseason. The Texans had to sign Ta'amu due to the thumb injury sustained by back up quarterback A.J. McCarron during Tuesday's practice with the Green Back Packers.

The Texans extended a rookie-camp invite to Ole Miss quarterback Jordan Ta'amu. Ta'amu worked with the Texans all three days with the offense during rookie mini-camp but was not offered a contract after the camp. He also took part in the Oakland Raiders rookie mini-camp.

Ta'amu and the Texans met at Ole Miss pro day and had a private workout.

Ta'amu checks in at 6-foot-3 and 221 lbs.

In 2018, Ta'amu threw for 3,918 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing for 342 yards and six rushing touchdowns. Completing 64% of his passes for the Rebels, Ta'amu averaged 326.5 yards per game and 9.4 yards per completion.

For his career he appeared in 20 games, throwing for 5,600 yards, 30 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions averaging 280 yards through the air per game.

At Ole Miss, Ta'amu broke the all-time school record for 400-yard passing games with four and tied the school record for most 300-yard passing games with twelve. He finished sixth all-time with 5,600 career passing yards. His 30 career passing touchdowns rank him ninth.

The Texans currently have two quarterbacks on the roster in Deshaun Watson and McCarron. Ta'amu will join the offense to back up Watson and help out Joe Webb III with the second and third-team offenses.

The Texans waived offensive lineman D.J. Coker to make room for Ta'amu.
